petrol cap door won't open! argh!

Hi Paul and Andy

I had this excact same problem of getting the fuel flap open, but when I used the key fob (open) and simulaniously pressing the fuel flap button it worked.

Another thing that was happening was the dash display and convienence unit was not seeing the door being open thus the interiour light didn't come on. For what ever reason Audi decided in there infinat wizdom to link the two systems. When the door is open, the fuel flap is permitted to be opened.

The cause of my problem turned out to be the micro switch in the door locking mechanism. I don't know if there is a way to test the microswitch with the door panel in place, but you can when its removed. Start looking there first.

Mike, would you be able to dig a price out for this part I think it could start being a comon fault :-0

I loaned out my copy of part cataloge

Regards Malcolm

This was just what mine was doing when i bought my A2 put up with it for a year untill my check strap started to go so replaced both at the same time, i've now had to fit the drivers rear micro switch and now the passenger side is playing up.

My wife's started doing this last week. It happened when I was filling the car for her. I guessed there would be a manual release and found it in the boot after about 10 mins of trying everything else. You could get badly caught out if you were running on fumes and had no idea how to open it.

However, from what I read here, once it goes, it's gone and pressing the open button on the key or manual release is the only way to open it. It's an intermittent problem on our car. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I guess I'll start with checking the switch. The switch does light up fine even when it isn't working.

We haven't noticed any problems with the central locking otherwise.

I am having the same problem with the fuel cap button not working, however with mine the buttons dont apear to light up! I recall this happening a couple weeks ago and just restarted the car and it came back to life. However it seems to be completely dead now. What does this mean, how do I fix it, willit be expensive?

It'll almost certainly be the microswitch in your driver's door. With the ignition on, does the display on the instruments show that the door is open?

Cheers,

ok cheers for the headsup tom, can this be a diy job? are there any instructions on here?

If you're handy with the spanners, then it's a DIY job. The window frame / motor mechanism etc all needs to be taken out to access the door lock, so it's not for the faint-hearted. There is a guide on here, somewhere. The part costs about £70.

Hi All, I though I'd just register and bring you some information about this subject!

I have had the same problem with opening the fuel cap on our A2 and to be honest, is how I found this site! I have tried a few of the recommendations with limited success. The main one being pressing the fuel cap release button while pressing the unlocking button on the key fob. I have been doing this and some times can be in the petrol station for 30+ mins!

However, I think I have found a solution..... With the drivers side door open, press and hold the fuel cap release button and then press the button with red key next to the door handle. I have done this now with 100% success!!!! Hopefully you will too!!!

Anyway, thanks and goooooooooooooooooooood night!

Hi Scatts, welcome along!

Good that you've found a work-around, though there is still obviously a fault. If it's related to the CCU, much more going wrong is probably in the post. By all means come back here, post any issue, and the collective knowledge of the club will no doubt help.

Cheers,

Tom

Hi

I'm another you can add to the list of fuel filler button failure, will check the door on the dash being open thing, hadn't noticed that.

Looks like next service it's a door micro switch, might as well do the check strap at the same time.

If you take your car to Audi for service they will love you for the micro-switch job, they hate doing them because like most garages their on bonus and they get squot for doing this job

Incidentally the fuel flap issue was one of the things which I asked Vince @ Stealth to look at, it turned out to be an earthing issue in the end. From the symptoms I had thought it was the microswitch.

Yes Carl as David has pointed out the manual override is behind the rear light cover then look over to where the flap us and just press down the bar and hey pesto the flap will open

Thanks for the help guys manged to open it on the 5th attempt at using the key method and pressing the fuel button at the same time :)

Found this thread through google search..................mine has stopped working today, Ive not had a go at the key fob button idea as yet but will report back ASAP.

Do the buttons illuminate when you open the driver's door? Does the open-door symbol appear in the instrument cluster when the driver's door is open? Do the interior lights come on?

Cheers,

Tom

All the above work Timmus

Cheers. The fuel cap is only operational when the driver's door is open. If the microswitch in the driver's door dies - resulting in the car not knowing whether the door is open or not - then the fuel cap won't open, even though there's nothing wrong with the fuel cap per se.
It seems that, in your case, the problem is actually with the fuel cap release mechanism.

I have a spare release solenoid if you need it.

Cheers,

Tom
