Power loss

Hi, I have a 2002 TDI 138k and have the issue ( which seems to be quite often reported ) of power loss . If I rev past 3600rpm and hold it for more than a moment it stutters a little then the power reduces approx 50%. If I stop and turn the engine off then immediately on it's cured. My local garage has replaced the Pierburg presure converter , turbo inlet and the turbo with very little improvement . Alas I think they are guessing and just replacing parts which is getting expensive. The car runs fine- it's smokey on start up then it's fine . I'm located near Plymouth - maybe there's an A2 specialist somewhere nearby. Any ideas much appreciated .

Well if the garage has not scanned the car then I have zero faith in their ability. So have a full VCDS scan done on the car and post the results here. If you have an old windows laptop with a USB port then after buying a KKL lead from ebay and downloading the Lite version of VCDS from Ross Tech you can scan it yourself.

The ignition cycling "clearing" the fault makes me firmly believe that you have a boost air leak probably from a split intercooler end cap.

Agree with audifan it's clearly going into limp mode. That means it will have recorded a fault code. Knowing what that code is will point you in the correct direction to fix it. If the code says its under boosting then Audifan might have scored a hole in one!

This symptom can be caused by a loose vacuum line usually above the o/s driveshaft but surely the garage would have noticed that?
Does it smoke under acceleration?

It smokes when I start it up but that seems to clear pretty quickly and haven't noticed anything whilst driving .
