Information Project JRV

My main wish is that it stays within the forum, and is used. After hard soul searching I find it hard to justify keeping it "sat on the shelf" hence advertising it here first.

Thought I would post an update on the car, I took a few photos the other day for a prospective buyer so thought I would share. Many thanks to @timmus as usual for assistance in cleaning up the interior plastics.

So yesterday, @Didgesteve picked up JRV to begin it's next adventure with him. It's been a rollercoaster, and to be honest, mostly ups :) I've had a great 7 or 8 months with the car, and hopefully Steve will have a lot more use out of him. He's already enjoying the stereo.

Many thanks must go to @timmus and @chumsofmanutd for their help in getting the car up to scratch and keeping him on the road. Guys, really from the bottom of my heart - I couldn't have done it without you!

Great to meet you Steve, sorry for the "interview" process of car purchase, just wanted to make sure he was going to somebody who would value him :)

So, I'll sign off on this project page, but Steve has promised to keep it going with updates on how he's getting on with the car :)

PS - I have written a further article for AudiDriver magazine on the project, but missed the deadline for the coming issue by two days, so this article will hopefully appear in an upcoming issue.

Just an update on the project:

I have just been to see @depronman in Blackpool and had the long 5th gear fitted. If anyone is in two minds about is this, I would say it is most definitely worth it. Not just for the money value in mpg, but the difference in the engine noise in the car at high speed is dramatically improved.

Also added to the car was a cruise control, with the ability to change speed built in, another recommendation from me. I had no idea how much fun it was driving motorways without any feet on the pedals. I have yet to compile figures about if it saves money or not, but I suspect travelling at a constant 68 would be more efficient than my wobbly guesswork of 70ish.

Lastly, Paul fixed a long standing fault of the washer bottle alarm constantly going off. I'd tried changing the sensor, tried shorting the contacts out, but to no avail, it was driving me potty going off every few miles. I was almost at the point of taking off the dash and ripping the sounder out. So thanks for saving my sanity there.

The stereo is also now programmed for Bose speakers (thanks again Paul), which makes a HUGE difference to the sound, so if your stereo hasn't been configured (you see the word BOSE show when you turn it on) and you have the Bose setup, then you really must get it done as soon as possible.

Next up are some snazzy rims from @A2Steve. As soon as their on I will put some pics up.

Anyone know where I can get jacking point covers for my vortex trim?

I thought Jeremy had a set for it?
I have, and will be sending them in due course. I've been off sick for the last week or so (hence few posts) :)

Good to know you sorted the washer bottle thing guys, well done.

I think it will look good with those rims on them :) Good choice Steve (s)

Hope you are feeling better mate and in time for Saturday.

Yes Steve's buying the cades alloys off Peppa but fitting higher profile tyres to fill the arches up a bit better and more comfort.

I thought it was time for an update:
After a lovely trip to Blackpool to visit @depronman, I now have a long fifth gear as well as cruise control. He also sorted out a long standing problem with the washer level alarm.
Fitted an undertray, thanks @A2Steve
Fitted the fibreglass engine cover, thanks @Naedugs
Not sure which addition in particular, but together this has made a huge difference to the volume of the engine heard from inside the car and makes for a nicer ride.
Replaced fuel cap switch, thanks @Snydersmuncher93

Finally painted and fitted the jacking point covers (see pic).
Although they needed small 3mm bolts to go into the surrounds to hang them on and to hold them in place, there didn't seem to be any other way of stopping them from falling out. Perhaps there was something missing from the inside of the kit?
Thanks @sciroccorrado for delivering these

Still to do:
The exhaust mounting bracket is on the wrong way round and makes a rattle on the heatshield when I select reverse or do anything in low revs with the car.
Find out why the car struggles to start with less than quarter of a tank of fuel in the car.

Will be the long 5th gear that as reduced the cabin noise especially at motorway speeds. I was very surprised how quiet mine was after I had fitted it. Is worth the cost on noise levels alone but I also get better mpg now

Set the cruise control to 70mph on the way down to Cornwall last night, touched 80 a couple of times overtaking. Leaving work to my destination = 247 miles on 17.1 liters *

65.6 mpg.
Thanks again Paul, that's got to be one of the best upgrades

* Superior diesel

Gave Project JRV some more love last week. Went to see Gary at B & F Autos for:

Timing belt, water pump and aux belt replacement
Brake fluid service
New tandem pump and rocker cover gasket
Fixed both front headlight mounts, broken on both sides
New rear wheel bearings
Replaced rear brake pads.
Exhaust downpipe mount cut and rewelded correctly
New thermostat
& an MOT (passed)

This follows a touchup respray of the bumpers and votex, so it's slowly coming together.

Edit: & fitted some recon headlights, courtesy of @A2Steve

I was only talking with Gary a couple weeks back, he was doing some work for me and he mentioned he had a customer who comes all the way from Wales, that must have been you then. ?
I do a lot of driving, one of the reasons I decided to get an A2 (& what a good deciscion that was), 3 hours to get to a garage isn't so far.
It's a four hour drive to see my Mrs, my life on the M5. ?

About time I posted an update on the Project JRV.

Pleased to say that it’s still going strong and it passed its MOT yesterday with no advisories.

Since my last update it’s had:

New Monroe shocks and a new set of springs (sorry, the lowered springs did nothing for the crashy/hard ride), as I’m getting old and my days of tripoding round corners has probably passed.
A new rocker cover, the old one couldn’t be stopped from leaking
Changed the gear shift cables after the old ones snapped.
New Intercooler.
Reconditioned the injectors.
New cab heater matrix.
Running on a set of 15” A1 rims, with some oversize 205/50 tyres. These rub a tiny bit on full lock reverse, but the difference in ride comfort is worth the inconvenience.
I’m sure there’s some more stuff that I’ve forgotten.

Thanks to the A2OC for keeping me interested and persuading me to stick with it when things went south.

Audrey has Monroe shocks with standard springs and the ride is lovely and supple. Glad to see another car with high club provenance still doing what it was designed to and receiving the love and attention it deserves.
