Project Madrid (2002 FSI)

Hi guys, after recently re-introducing myself, I have now taken ownership of my second A2 ( FSI ) which I’ve just imported from Germany to Madrid.

I’ve loved the A2 since it was initially released when I was a kid, so this is my chance to enjoy both the car and the process of restoring it and making it my own.

As in all major citys, Diesel’s are being elbowed out so it had to be the FSI for me this time round and I only considered cars with OSS this time round after wishing I had one on my first A2.

I’m still finalising the paperwork and will be taking the car for its first ITV (Spanish MOT) soon.

Good things about the car (in rough order of priority)

Car drives great- no EML light or noticeable issues driving at all so far.

A 2002 Car has covered roughly 131,000km (80,000 miles) and has a good service history with Audi and then one other lady owner ( with some long finger nails by the looks of things ;) ).

Working dash cup holders!

The suspension on the OEM 16 wheels actually feels really good but I will check the tyre pressures as well to make sure they’re not doing all of the work.

Bad points

Dent on bumper - I will be talking to a body shop but thoughts on this? Fixable?

Scruffy paint and wheels ( I didn’t mind as I know I want to change both)

Gear change feels good if a little ‘notchy’ but the gearstick has no ‘spring’ to it when releasing it from the left or right in the neutral position - any thoughts on this? Gearbox oil will be the first check on my list.

Drivers window switches need replacing

Broken glovebox handle ( found the handle )

Looks like someone bumped a cigarette against the hazard switch and the Symphony stereo will replace both ( and address worn climate buttons)

Tired boot struts

Needs a really good clean including some treatment to the leather to make it softer again.
Obviously I’ll put a few more Km’s on the clock before spending much money but I’ll be working through the items above. I’ll place a marketplace ad to see if someone can help out with parts.

I’ll keep this thread updated as I work through the list.

Cheers

Hi Stuart

Hopfully we can get your A2 looking great again.

With the wiper arm, there isn't actually a cover missing, you just have the later style aero wiper arm.

But if you want a cover I designed one a few years ago as I felt the aero arm looked naked. It also serves to keep the rain out of the pivots and helps to reduce wear on them
I’ve already mirrored it for the LH drive A2’s
It is £10 plus postage and comes in satin black 2K paint
No idea of postage cost to Spain though

PM me if you want one

Cheers. Paul

Happy for Paul to send it down to me and I’ll send it in the package with your other items?

Price will be £11.65
I’ll drop a pm now

Hello Stuart,

That’s a very nice example that will be sorted in no time I’m sure. Some very desirable items already added to this A2 at the factory. Can I see a RNS-E PU being fitted in the future with Rear OPS being displayed on it.

Good luck with this one and keep the pictures coming.

Kind regards,

Tom

Only if you happen to passing through Madrid and want to fit it for me 😉

Hello Stuart,

I just never know where work will take me next. I’ve nipped over the channel a few times in recent years so will let you know if anything develops. If I do then I’ll honour a free RNS-E PU fitting for you. Might even be able to supply one!

Kind regards,

Tom

Can’t say no to that offer 😉 - I’ll honor you a decent lunch then. Let me know when the stars align 👍

Small update - temporary car paperwork is done so at least drivable. Took it for another run and still running great. Will get started on cleansing & conditioning the leather and servicing the OSS soon. Now booked on for a service and cam belt change.

Looking at wheel options I can get these 17” Seat Ibiza ones for a decent price and I think with a badge change could look good:

Not sure on the sizing though - they are:

5x100 - 7J - ET41

I’ve checked the Definitive Tyre size thread, but that ET number is throwing me off.

If anyone knows, I’d appreciate it 👍

Cheers,

Stuart

Lots of progress made:

Interior clean
Leather feed
Brake light replaced (Thanks A2steve)
Full service including cambelts

Just been to visit the paint shop and very happy with what they’ve achieved:

Especially pleased with the fix they’ve made to the front bumper - I thought I might have to replace it for one without the headlight jets. I’ve asked them to do the mirror housings in black as well.

Next up will be finishing some paperwork for the proper Spanish plates and adding some TT comps which I’ve sourced but need a refurb and new tyres.

That looks great. What about having the rear windows tinted too? Will probably help with temperatures in the car and also make the new roof colour more apparent.

Good shout Steve. Will add it to my to do list. OpenSky and leather seats is going to be a challenge with the Spanish summer, so tinting is a good idea.I’d like to remove the blinds as well but will look at that again at the end of Autumn. Fortunately in Madrid there is a lot of underground parking ( including under our apartment ) so that helps.

Wow! I like it very much! Good idea the roof in black and lower plastic in grey. Mine (1.4 petrol 75hp) is having problems with the ECU and it's stopped at the garage from february. They do not find how to fix it. I do not want to scrap it. You said that you live in Madrid, me too. Can you recommend a good garage to my audi?

Hola José, gracias - te mando un PM. 👍

Hi folks,

So after a long hot Madrid Summer, there’s been a lot of rain recently resulting in a dirty car and some much needed water for the local lavender.

All the paperwork completed for Spanish plates, and finally got the refurbed TT comps fitted today (and put club badges on) - pleased with the look and happy with the ride (Spanish roads are generally excellent condition compared to my home turf of Somerset):

Next up, rear window tints (and maybe the roof) and a few interior bits to tidy up.

Cheers,

Stuart
