Replacing the corners on the front spoiler

I ordered the parts today. The small wheel arch parts will be 3 - 5 days approx. And the slim spoiler and under tray will be direct form germany so may be a few weeks. I will post up some info when i get them

Thats cool. i didn't know it anything needed drilling. I have loads of axle stands so i will sort this soon
Yes, you need to drill. Or make your own bracket. You see a custom made Aluminium sheet metal, I think on my images above. You can buy the three rives and mount it as it is original on the 1.2TDI when you drill. For that you need an extra short drill mashine.

As I know, the holes for the tunnel cover are allready there!
First pic shows it and other pics are the other covers, I think.

Some people say, they save up to 10% fuel with the slim spoiler this central tunnel cover.

Hi thanks, can i just ask why you fitted it with alluminum?

If i can just drill and mount why did you use the alloy? Just so i know for when i come to fit it

It was not me. That was one who did not wanted to make an hole in this metal part, but there are holes in the original 1.2. (he thought he would destabilise the crossmember.)

I only mounted the front spoilers at this time.

I would drill the holes and mount it as the original.

Thanks for the helpful information.

I don't speak german however i did register on the other site so i can see all the pictures. It seems that the part fitted with an alloy plate, is held on in 3 places similar to the 3 locations on the 1.2TDI, If he didn't want to drill the cross member how and what are the 3 fixings attached to?

1.2 TDI locations.

Any ideas Mike or Erstens?

Here's the drawing from ETKA, showing the spoiler and the underbody linings and how they fix.

How the alloy part fixes to the subframe, I don't know, as it's not a genuine part.

Cheers,

Mike

He used three U-bolts/clamps made from alloy to get AROUND the crossmember. (not though it with holes)

But as I said, forget it and just use a drill.

Edit: I am wrong with the picture as this is just the plastic from the spoiler but as I remember, he did it like this. Maybe not above but from the down side.

Thankyou both

I was begining to think about a u bolt or clamp (like exhaust clamp). But as you say i will just drill it, the size of a small hole in 3 places spread wide across the cross member won't make any difference. It's like a joist in the structure of a house, it takes a lot of load but also has holes across its length (for pipes, cables etc) its fine as long as you don't drill large diameter holes close together. If the theory works it will be fine :)

You'll not cause any structural problems Emm, but to be on the safe side, be sure to prime and paint the holes you make, to stop any rot setting in (or oxidization at it's ally).

Cheers,

Mike

Remember, a petrol becomes more hot at the exhaust as a Diesel and that is the why, why they don't have all the covers but it should work with the part and partnumber, I gave.

Thanks for the images. Keep us updated, if you save any petrol. (wheel arch spoilers will have no effect but maybe the rest... , if you drive fast).

My Sept 2002 1.6 FSi has these. They are mentioned in features on the 1.6 introduction:-

Autocar 10th April 2002: 'and small spoilers sit in the front wheel arches to improve high-speed stability, though this remains an A2 weakness'

4car review: 'and the front wheel arches are very slightly flared for improved aerodynamics'

They also give a handy scraping sound, warning of imminent spoiler/undertray contact!

I have all these mentioned parts already fitted to my fsi makes it look more sporty as well now that I know what they are actually for makes it even better thanks erstens

I also assembled the two 'A spoiler' on the corners of the front bumper. It took me one hour. Stil had to dril some because they were missing.

Are there any A spoilers for the rear weals????
Has anyone a pictures of these?

Skipton, did you fit the parts?

Update from Germany:
Someone who fitted the slim spoiler, th etunnel cover and to other self made covers now saves fuel. He mostly goes fast on the freeway and saves 0,3 l/100l which is about 5% with his TDI 90.

You should see the latest self made mods and they are legal even in Germany;)
