Soft Touch Butttons - Solved .....very nearly.

I realise this thread has not been updated for some time, but having just got a car with worn buttons I am interested in all options.

Having read through it appears to me that making an accurate copy of the symbols and then getting them laser cut on stickable transfer would help mask the bits needing to be left then plastic coat the controls, possibly in situ and seal them.

Having spent many years with Letraset and and scalpel hopefully I can do a relatively accurate job.

Any other hints or tips welcome of course.
I did look at getting those stickers but noticed the symbols were not right for the car and from the comments are not an ideal situation.

I find that the A4 hard touch buttons are a compromise worth trying.
No more wear, relatively easy to swap (even without removing the climate panel or any parts of the dash)
yes they are slightly darker but much better than stickers.

But if you have the means and skill to make "masks" to enable you to repainted them then that is a real option (but don't they wear quickly?)

I have found a few sign companies locally who make self adhesive low tack decals for masking so now just have to size up the symbols.

Does anyone know if the buttons are removable as this would make it easier to respray them with a new mat coated plastic rubber?

luckily the ones that wear are easily removed in situ, but if you need to remove them all you will need to remove the climate panel and take the face off. I then push them out with a blunt rod, from behind. The smaller ones can be very tight. But you just need to grit your teeth and push.

The TDI I just bought had the usual worn buttons on the climate panel. So I searched eBay (no soft touch ones of course) but I did come across a fully hard touch climate panel in great condition (must have come from a 2000/ 2001 A2. It was £60 which was fair enough.

So when it arrived today it took me literally 5 minutes to go from this

The camera does make it seem more of a contrast than it really is, but I am very happy with the end result.

I'm lucky, as my A2 is a 2001 se and have been told that after this year they used soft touch buttons. Mine are still intact. Regards Spud
