Swapping the A2 for a BMW i3 - thoughts please

The total lack of torque below 3000 rpm. The diesel is always ready to deliver when I push the pedal, but that might partially be due to the tuning.

Many people think they have a race car to A2, a A2tdi ,1.4 1.6 not have these properties.
It starts with audi from the RS4
You can tell if you 've ever driven in Germany :)

I don't follow your logic if you refer to my answer. We are comparing a Fsi to an Tdi, where come the RS4 in to this? And what has Germany to do with it?

If you do not understand what I mean, it makes no sense to explain it
If I can help perhaps, forgive me Pocoloco but it may help if I explain what you meant.

I thinlk that you were basically saying that the A2 (whichever engine) is no Race car.

In the Audi range you only start to get true performance cars from the RS4 upwards.

I think that is right Pocoloco? I hope you don't mind me helping.

Your English is very good, my foreign language skills are non-existent and so I am always impressed when people can speak in multiple languages.

Steaman speaks English well too!!! ;)

With that logic, the A2 only need one type of engine. We discussed the differences between the Fsi and Tdi90 and in my case preferences to one of the A2 models I own. I still don't see how that relates to a Race car. Or is it my wish for torque below 3000 rpm that only is needed in Race cars?

I drop it, but still thinks its a strange comment.

Whatever was meant I agree with your point, I find the torque on the tdi very addictive. The FSI is a little flyer but to me the tdi definiteely feels quicker at normal driving pace.

When you rev the FSI to the full, it flies, but I find that driving at normal traffic speeds the torque of the tdi can be felt without having to go quickly.

So to me the FSI is quick when pressed (for a small economical car). the tdi feels quick without forcing it (again, for a small economical car)

But thankfully we are all different and some people prefer the FSI to the tdi and vice versa!

hi,
a couple of thoughts
1. the a2 seems a more interesting car
2.electric & in hybrid sounds alright - we recently bought a kia soul diesel - I had thought of of the electric but sales staff were rather
unimpressed so need to ensure you are happy with the package
Incidentally any of the small BMWs I have seen look funky
It was my brother in law who inspired me to think about an a2 which we brought from Wales to ni three years ago and it is an ace car and well built - he has just bought himself a mazda mx5 - could be a quality head turner!
happy motoring!

comments are getting strange so I thought I'll drop one too:
a2 nice car, good tires , bmw m5 I've been driving in Germany, electric cars are nice too, Fsi kicks ass, TDi great economy but... you know what I mean

excuse me for that lads, but just wanted to share my emotions with you hahaha
Anyway A2 isn't a race car in any means , but it's well built with sporty driving characteristics...
engines used are giving sporty feel in two different ways... yes it's true ,high low torque engines like TDi with quick power delivery response give driver impression of sporty feel... but in real world
FSi will be sportier for someone who used to race anything... as linear power delivery is what you need, high revving engine is also what you need.... it's more precise and natural way of car delivering power to the wells... but I'm not surprised people naturally choose tdi and feel like it's quicker...

A good summary, as i drive the A2 in city the natural choice is the Tdi, while on Country roads or on Highways I prefer my A7.

But your comment "Fsi kicks ass"!

Nice answers , but try to translate it once in Dutch.
Sorry that you feel stepped on your ****

Hollandse gezegde :p

I suspect the ride is helped at least a little by the wieght of the motor and all those batteries. When you hit a bump there is at least some weight resistance to stop you from being rattled.

I would go for the REX version (and I am tempted too) it is just that I prefer to not have to worry about finding a charge point when the battery is fading.

My biggest dilemma would be due to the fact that I can only have two cars where I live, so one of the A2s would have to go.

It would seem obvious to sell my wife's TDI 90 and then we could share mine, but my wife (understandably) is saying "NO, there is no way I would drive your A2 around, I would be too scared to scratch it" I can see her point. So that would mean selling mine!!! Not only would that kiil me, but I would effectively be losing about 18K (because regardless of how much I have spent on it (i.e. TOO MUCH) there is a ceiling on how much any A2 would be worth).

So that is probably the only thing stopping me from getting an A2.

Wait a minute!!! I think I have a solution, sell her car and replace it with the i3, she can use it around town and I can use it whenever I want.

No wait another minute!!!! My wife would NEVER drive anything other than an A2, she absolutely loves A2s and she i not "into cars" at all!!

Damn, looks like I won't be getting an i3 after all!!!

Steve B

Well I found a solution.

My wife was totally against me selling the project (told you she had sense!) so I thought that this therefore meant that I couldn't work out a way to have an i3. But I have just cracked it!!!!

One rerason I normally end up selling my projects is because I get them to a state where they are more or less finished and so as good as they can get. Then they can only go one way, they deteriorate !!! so it goes from being a dream to bulld it to a reality of stone chips, wear and tear etc.

So since that is happening now, I have decided that a compromise might work!

The plan is as follows.

I have found a good quality car storage company reasonably local. They store VERY expensive cars and look after them really well.
They also allow regular access to take the car for a weekend whenever you want.

So I can get the car valetted and looking at its best and then store it and use it whenever I want.

That frees up a space for the i3 and I get to keep my A2. Works out a tad expensive (£200 a month, but that is cheap down here for that quality storage service). In fact I lose a LOT less money than if I sold my project, so it is not as crazy as it sounds. (ok it may be as crazy as it sounds, but it kinda works and my wife has said that she is ok with it as long as I don't sell my A2)

So I have tracked down a lease deal on a new i3.

Basically I get my car ready for AITP, then drive it to the storage straight after it.
Leave it there and pick up the i3 the next day.

The biggest trigger for this was the test drive of the i3, very impressed with it. 0-60 to match a BMW M3, lots of gadgets (a must for me) interesting car to have, with the size of an A2? What was there to not like.

With the bonus of my A2 to drive whenever I want to and it being kept warm and dry and it top condition for many years to come.

Very pleased.

Could you not rent a nearby secure garage? You would probably find one for less than £50pm.

£200pm is a lot of money. That could get you a standard spec i3

What spec have you chosen? Some tech extras on the i3 are tbh gimmicks. Don't bother with auto parking, rear camera etc.

I would suggest Sport pack and Pro Nav at the least. Sport pack includes LED headlights, Privacy glass, HK Audio and Turbine wheels. Add £500 if you want the 20's, which imo look awesome!

Hi Paul,

It has the sport pack and the pro media (Pro Nav) with the Suite interior world, they are the only options (they are quite well specced as standard aren't they!). It is a car they have unregistered, in stock so I had to choose from 9 of them this one seemed to have the best spec. Protonic Blue with Frozen Grey accent (not my first choice but it looks ok?

As for the garage option, I paid 70 per month to put the A2 in last year, It was quite a secure one too. Within 10 days seven of the garages were broken into, including mine. Luckily enough they didn't do much damage but I am too worried to do it again.

It needs to be a secure and dry storage so I have had to bite the bullet!.

My job is boring and ranges from super stressful down to brain numbingly pointless. But the money is great and so I have decided to use some of it to get the car I want. So, you are right, £200 is way too much, but for peace of mind and flexibilityt of access etc. I will have to pay the price.

That is a very nice spec!
Similar to the spec of ours and tbh, they are the only options you really need as it already comes with climate, heated seats, heated mirrors, dimming mirror, etc, etc.

The upgrade interiors also come with interior LED lighting and LED external door handles. You can also code the car for video playback, folding mirrors and many more cool vcds like coding features.

You probably already know all this though. :)

I forgot to ask... what colour i3?
