Tdi90 clattering and knocking on overrun and at idle

My wife took a dim view of my unreliable Audi A2 and wanted me to replace it with something more reliable after a run of ‘strandings’. The reason for 3 of the breakdowns was Tyres! My wife still didn’t see my logic that all cars have Tyres and these failures were not due to an old car or the car itself. The other was an alternator going ping so fair enough but I’m not sure that logic was ruling the heart in these conversations.
A quick spreadsheet showing how much more it would cost each month for the cheapest of newer cars and a low profile apart tyre and happy motoring ensued.

Just an update. Awesome confirmed that the fault was the DMF, replaced it and the clutch for around £850. The car does drive much better than it did pre-failure, though it isn't the night-and-day difference some might have suggested it would be. Clutch uptake is much smoother, though, and it's easier to trickle a bit of power on, there's now no shunt in the driveline which there used to be. That's clearly a sign of incipient DMF failure which I'll take note of for next time (though hopefully, I can look at another 100k miles before that's an issue...)

Planning to keep the car for a bit longer now. :)

Good to hear all is now well !. My DMF problems were slow to develop with the only real symptoms being a "heavy" clutch with slight vibration. With driving it regularly I didn't really notice anything was wrong until it was pointed out by "Yorkshirehill" and diagnosed by a local garage. The clutch feels so much lighter now and gear change is a pleasure. :)
