Just wondering if anyone has any information on towing small trailers with the A2? Any sources of articles, trailer hitch manufacturers, etc. are appreciated. I have a 2001 1.4 petrol A2 and would like to tow a small lightweight trailer carrying bicycles. Total trailer weight would be under 250 Kgs.

Maybe in the UK, but my dealer in Switzerland was unable to provide any information. Any idea as to the cost, capacity, etc.? Thanks

According to EF MAX - that has a towbar fitted to his car - you can only get a towbar as OE equipment ordered from the factory when you order your car... It can't be retrofitted...

Was that the Audi official line? I don't believe that it's impossible, surely anything is possible?

My dealer was very vague about the towbar. He said he could charge anything he liked. I pointed out that he was quoting twice the price of the detachable towbar on the Volvo, he was unimpressed. So was I.
 
Let's hope that somebody can be found to RETRO fit a towbar. I had a trick detachable towbar fitted to my A-Cl***, so asked the supplier if they'd fit one to an A2, and the answer was no.
It's a feature I really miss. I know that this has been discussed before on the Forum.

A towbar CAN be retrofitted... according to Audi dealers here in Germany, parts are €530 + cost to install it. I can get the part numbers if someone needs them... (towbar part + electrical kit).

If this is available from German dealers, I think that many readers (including me)would appreciate the part numbers.

I needed a tow bar for work,, I only needed to work with about 350Kg. I was told by four independent towing companies,, no can go on an A2. If it is not listed then they won’t touch it,, all due to rules and regs.

I spoke to Audi and the official line was, yes you can have one but only if ordered at the factory and only on 2003 models onwards.

I have now looked under my car at this rather neat detachable tow bar and also underneath a standard A2 and there appears to be a few minor mods to the chassis to accommodate the towing kit.

There is also the fact the wiring has to be taken care of and also the changes made to the DIS and basic instrument panel display when you are actually towing.

I am sure I will discover other things but I haven’t brought a trailer yet so I can’t say.

Max weight on the towing ball is 50Kg and I was told that adjustments have been made/allowed for in my sports suspension,, not too sure if this true as I can not prove it.

By the way if you do buy a factory fitted one then it needs an a 7 pin UK adapter which Audi sell for £90 + vat but I got an identical one from my local towing company, who sell them to my local Audi dealer, for £13.25 inc VAT.
 
I was told that the towbar add-on can be ordered for every model, but was not avaiiable until early 2003. I will get the Part no.´s as soon as possible...

Just as an aside here, does the A2 owners manual say anything about the A2 being used for towing?.

It's just that I read something in a motoring mag, where someone asked about towing (I think it was a Golf) and the reply was that as the owners manual doesn't mention towing, if you fit the kit and have problems you could be in trouble re the warranty.

Anyone got any experience of this?.

When I first posted this question, I had no idea it would prove so difficult to get a straight answer. On doing some more research, I came upon this question & answer:

"I have a Audi A2 and want to tow my small trailer but nobody lists a towbar. Can I have one specially manufactured?

No. When EC type approving the vehicle, the manufacturer did not declare that it was suitable for towing. It therefore has no specified towing capacity and no specified mounting points. Towing with any such vehicle after the date of implementation would make you liable for prosecution."

In my car´s papers, a towing capacity of 1000kg for trailers with a brake and 540kg for trailers without a brake is specified, also a permit No. E1 00-1234 for the towbar is listed.... maybe that is the EC approval?

I finally have the part numbers:

8Z0 092 155 Towbar 280,17 €
8Z0 055 204 electrical kit 125,00 €

Not possible on the 1.2TDI (because of the gearbox, as far as I know).
