Trip to Scotland - Any Requests?

Hello fellow A2ers,

I am heading to Edinburgh next week to do some retrofitting and repair work. Although notice is short, I thought I'd let people know of my travel plans in case there are any other requests.

I'll be in Edinburgh on Tuesday, but otherwise my plans are fairly fluid. I can drive back to my home in Lancaster down the eastern side of this island should there be interest in the Tyne, Wear and Tees area, etc. I'll be heading up on the western side, meaning I'll be passing D&G, the Glasgow area, etc. I'm also happy to extend my journey north of the Firth of Forth.

If you're in need, please send me a PM. If a job is likely to require parts - such as replacement door locks to solve microswitch issues, etc - please get in touch asap. Retrofitting kits are already in stock to add a lot of factory options.

Cheers,

Tom

Hi Cammy,

I sent you a PM a few days ago but hadn't received a reply. I'll send you another with the plans so far and hopefully we can sort something out.

Cheers,

Tom

Thanks to all those who got in touch.

The schedule is now Edinburgh on Tuesday, Glasgow and Airdrie on Wednesday and Glenrothes on Thursday.

Cheers,

Tom

tom did you check your route regarding your schedule because to make it a smoother journey, if it were me i would do Glasgow, Airdrie, Edinburgh and Glenrothes or vice versa. unless the other people you have on your schedule have conflicted times.

either way its all good :)

will give you a phone tomorrow.

cheers

If only things had fallen into place so neatly! The job in Edinburgh needs to be done on Tuesday and the one in Glenrothes can only be done on Thursday, so I shall become even better acquainted with the M8 as I go back and forth. Also, my accommodation (at a friend's house) is in Edinburgh.

Cheers,

Tom

hi tom,

just a quick question...can you do the 12v socket mod in the boot along with the extra interior light in boot?

if so, i can order the parts from fleabay as i would like to add this to my list of possible upgrades :) if not it can wait til a later date :)

i have soul black interior but off the top of your head (cos i cant remember) do you know if the boot panels are the same colour as the interior that being soul black cos ive got it in my head that mines looks a lighter grey rather than the soul black strange but i will check tomorrow. you can check photos on my thread roof bars, sun blind and photos.

cheers

Just a quick post to say how great it was to put faces to forum names. Thanks to everyone I've visited over the last few days for their kindness and hospitality.

The fuel efficiency results are in! Lancaster -> Penrith -> Edinburgh -> Glasgow -> Airdrie -> Edinburgh -> Glenrothes -> Lancaster was a total of 535 miles, all done on one 34-litre tank of fuel. Without driving with fuel economy in mind, I averaged 73.5mpg. Given that there was a fair amount of inner-city driving, that my car was fully laden and that the motorway sections are hilly (up and over Shap summit twice), I'm pleased with that.

A further trip north of the border is in the pipeline.

Cheers,

Tom

i hope my car wont give you too much of a headache when you come back to fix it lol

anyways thanks for your time and will see you soon when youve conquered the bearing challenge :D

cheers

Do you have the 6speed box now Tom I can't remember?

I, too visited Scotland, for the Military Tattoo. I have a similar car and gearbox. I also didn't have economy in mind as regards to my driving style (but I was driving quite sensibly) Those are the similarities .... Over 832 miles, my fuel consumption was 61.7 mpg. Just how do you do it, Tom? I think that the best that I've ever achieved was ~ 65 mpg ...

Indeed, you and I both drive full-fat TDI75s with identical gear ratios. How do I do it..? Um, I'm not entirely sure, though driving style must be a large part of the answer. MikeMars also drives a 6-speed TDI75 and trounces me in the economy stakes.

I suppose this is somewhat misleading. Unlike Mike, I don't drive along making a conscious effort to always minimise my fuel consumption, but (like Mike), my ingrained default drivng style is quite economical. I use my brakes very little; anticipating the traffic ahead, I in-gear coast as much as possible when I need to lose momentum. Getting up to cruising speed is done quickly and reducing my speed is done slowly; I would never use my brakes when slowing to come off the motorway. Once I'm up to cruising speed on the motorway, I hold a steady speed, burning fuel only to maintain momentum. If I'm covering large distances, I stop as little as possible. Even pulling over at services eats an appreciable amount of fuel.
But while I'm driving along, I hit cruise control, turn up the tunes and rock out. Yes, I like big mpg scores, but my mind isn't preoccupied by fuel efficiency, as that detracts somewhat from my pleasure of driving.

Cheers,

Tom

Good to see you again Tom and to watch you work on Bruces baby again. Glad you had a safe trip home and no doubt we will meet again some time

cheers Paul
