Whats gone wrong with your A2

Mine had to have a new reconditioned engine fitted when a timing belt sprocket seized at 60mph, creating havoc with the piston heads and valves. Only about 21,000 on clock too ! Luckily happened 2/3 weeks before warranty ran out, over 2 years ago.
Also ;-
2 x Airbags changed ( steering wheel & drivers side. )
wing mirror adjuster knob broke off.
dipstick end broke.
N/S/F wheel bearing changed @ 35,000 .
glovebox hinge pin keeps falling out.
heaps loads of rattles , tapping, & clonks from numerous parts of the car !!

sounds to me that the diesel is more reliable than the petrol
is this true ?????
had mine tdi 75 for about a year now
with no problems at all ( touch wood )
love it to bits

Silent majority?

What's gone wrong in over three and a half years? Nothing yet. Not even a hint of a problem!!!
Am I lucky, or just one of the silent majority?

Have had my A2 for 4.5 years now and up until recently i've had no real problems except for uneven front tyre wear, as in the inside of the tyres had worn through past the steel and kevlar and burst! No point even trying to repair that with the Audi tyre sealant! Anyway just bought the space saver off Glen so no more waiting to get towed to a tyre place.
As i said, no real problems until recently!

40,000ish, intermittent warning lights. Diagnostics, steering angle sensor.
Offside droplink replaced and new anti roll bar bushes fitted. (VW Polo bushes. Part number: V6Q0 411 314 N. Does away with the broken collars and clamps the bar really tight, without having to fit the new style Audi roll bar and bushes.Works a treat:D) After all the play was taken out of the ARB, the steering sensor warning lights have not come on again.

50,000, the aircon stopped working. Had it re-gassed but still no joy. (The so called aircon and gas conversion specialist told me the pump must have gone and all without Vagcom! IDIOTS!!)
When Mike (Skipton01) came to fit the cruise control it showed up as a sensor fault and flaps on the Vagcom. Anyway took it to be serviced and for the aircon to be fixed.
All the problem was was the high pressure sensor, cheap enough at £36 apart from the 2 hour labour cost of £80, as the front bumper has to come off to get to it. Now freezes you t_t's off though!
Also get intermittent bleeps from alarm siren now and again, so will need to replace this at some time.

55,000, had the A2 remapped. Found out when this was being done that the maff sensor was faulty as they could not get the tuning quite right, so this had to be replaced, which totally through out the remap and had to remapped again from scratch.
Then a week later started to lose power. Cause; the inter-cooler had split, so had to have a new one fitted. (Took 10 days though as Audi UK where waiting for stock of these to arrive!) A big thankyou to Awesome GTI though as they let me keep hold of the courtesy car all this time. When the joint between the radiator and inter-cooler was disturbed, the radiator started to leak slightly, so had to have a new radiator fitted also. Add to the bill a new cambelt kit and water pump which it was originaly booked in for and you were left with a bit of loose change out of £800!!
Could of been worse though. I bet it would of cost nearer £1500-£1600 if done at a Audi main steeler!!

Anyway all seems to be well now, fingers crossed, touch wood etc!
All said and done, when these costs are spread evenly over 4.5 years then its not been too bad at all; add to this ultra cheap road tax and good fuel economy.
Hopefully we will have another 50,000 miles trouble free motoring now all seems to have been sorted, Brads.

Hi Brads
Long term, the Polo roll bar bushes may wear enough for the bar to move sideways. If this happens it could probably be fixerd using shaft collars sold by RS Components. They do alloy, stainless and plastic versions in most bore sizes and there is probably enough 'meat' to skim out the bores for a custom fit if required. Cost is around £5 - £10 each.

Thanks for that Spike, when the bushes eventually start wearing i'll replace them and fit some collars as well. Must admit that even buying 2 collars and new bushes is a damn site cheaper than the new ARB and fitting. Glen has a set of the polo bushes and will be having them fitted
to his A2. If his work as well as mine have, then this fix is well worth considering; especially for A2 owners who's car is out of warranty and dont fancy a large bill for rectifying this problem.
Cheers, Brads.

Hopefully one of a large number of the silent majority. Had mine 2 1/2 years (A2 now 3 1/4 years old and a total of 34,600 miles) and nothing other than a service and 2 windscreen wiper blades (just can't seem to get a good clean).

200k on my wagons & they just keep rolling along

Hi.Not been on for a while because the little motor just wont do anything wrong.Ive now clocked up 200k since april 02 between two a2s,180 on first & 20 on second. They have both been Audi main dealer maintained & the only real hiccup was an overheating problem that took a few attempts to sort, turned out to be a head gasket in the end.The ist a2 with 180k had original clutch & gearbox. It even only had to have one wiper blade changed in its life & even that was done foc under warranty after 95k. My current a2 is a 54 plate 75 horse tdise with blanked out fogs (keep breaking them so fitted sports blanking covers as we never really see any fog & keeps the mot man happy) & tints all round(tints already fitted when purchased)its pale blue metallic with 16" rims if anyone sees me out & about around cambridgeshire mostly. Feels good to post again.

The return of the Steeple Bumstead rep.!!

Nice to hear that you're still a chuffed A2 driver.

Cheers,

Mike

Much has gone wrong, but I still love it to death

New here, from Holland, looking for other people's experiences with the A2. Mine is 3 years old, have had it for half it's life.

* Stabilizer rod front left replaced at 15k
* Fuel injection relay replaced at 18k and at 26k
* Aircon internal valves replaced at 18k
* New oil sensor at 25k, after heaps of alarms, checks and resets
* New fuel vaporizer at 28k, it was running on 3 cylinders
* Rear backrest lock replaced
* Foggy headlights fixed twice (first they fitted the inside cap back wrongly)
* Battery got drained once after 3 days of idletime, never found the cause, but I have kept that flimsy cigar lighter at home ever since

I wish I had a 1.6FSI and man, do I hate that dipstick, but I really really love the little thing.

Hi Mike.Yes well chuffed apart from not being a rep but a hard working service engineer in need of an 88 million lottery win.

I merely meant that you were the representative of Steeple Bumstead, or the A2OC correspondent!

Cheers,
