Why did my power steering fuse pop?

Anyone know how this g65 releases? I can't find a guide.

Switching to econ still caused fuse to blow. Just want to see if it is this sensor.

Anyone?

The problem with mine was the power steering pump because of the location and design the connections filled up with water on the pump causing it to blow the big fuse under the passenger footwell 80amp , replaced the pump after trying three different ones which all had the same problem water which had collected inside the bottom of the pump . Went to a parts yard and took one off a fabia vrs , it's finally working now bit of a mission to get to the pump. Also covered the pump to prevent future water damage

Definitely not my G65. Is brand new Audi part, replaced last week. Disconnected it this morning, replaced fuse, everything fine. Stationary full lock turn, and, you've guessed it, pop goes the fuse! I heard it. That's twice now, blowing at same moment this morning.

Doesn't narrow it down though, because it just means that the circuit is overloaded.

Maybe mine's the pump too?

Most likely, take the plugs off the pump and see if you've got moisture inside and if you have then definitely you have got water in the pump you'll have to take it off empty the fluid turn it up side down see how much water comes out , mine was like an open tap for about 5 seconds

What did you cover it with? Could you post a photo?

Cheers

Bin liner cable ties black tape made like a skirt around the pump with bin liner then cable tied the top then black taped lol

Hi folks,

In haste, as I've got lots to do before I leave home tomorrow morning for a few weeks...

Circuit 38, for a basic TDI (without a vast array of optional extras) feeds the following:
G22 speedo drive (top of gearbox)
N280 (from memory, is this the one connected to the aircon compressor?)
G65 (just behind the aircon radiator)
E87 (the climate control unit itself)
G266 (the oil level/temp sensor in the sump)
E3 (the hazard warning switch above the cup holders)
J500 (the power steering control unit, attached to the power steering pump)

If you've got heated seats or an auto-dimming mirror or factory telephone prep or OEM parking sensors, etc, then these are also fed from fuse 38. But, given that we've got two cars with the same problem, I'd guess it's a component that's common to all TDIs that's the cause of the fault. I hope I've listed all the possible culprits above, but in my rush I could have missed something. I doubt this is a wiring loom issue because a) they're almost unheard of and b) you've both got exactly the same problem. I could be wrong, of course, but I'd start by looking at the devices fed by fuse 38 rather than the wiring.

With a bit of methodical trial and error, you will find the problem. Unplug stuff, soak test, plug stuff in, soak test, etc. You may chew a few fuses in the process, but nothing that was made by man cannot be fixed by man. :)

Good luck!

Tom

PS: I'm almost totally booked-up for the next 4 or 5 week, but I am willing to have a go at solving this.

Thank you for this post Tom saved me a whole world of pain.

Power steering stopped working, fuse 38 blown replaced blew straight away.

Saw this post and thought I have had the oil level sensor on for the last week and was going to get it changed on next oil change.

Took undertray off and unplugged the oil level sensor and oil came out of the plug

Replaced fuse and power steering worked again

Found I have a leaking dump gasket and oil is going straight into the plug and has caused the problem....

All new parts on order.

Just a thought on the FSI would the Nox sensor be on this fuse as well? As that code has thrown up over the last week as well

Fantastic source of information this forum, thank you A2OC folks.

I was just driving earlier when a oil can symbol flashed with the word 'Sensor'... I thought but I checked the oil level on the dipstick only yesterday (having owned various Italian cars over the years it becomes force of habit).

Anyway, one shouldn't ignore such warnings so I pulled over, lifted the bonnet, checked coolant level, all okay, dipstick level of oil all good. So a little perplexed I set off again but immediately I lost all power steering and the steering symbol flashed. I suspect I have the same issue of an oil pressure sensor plug filling with oil. Will get onto it now or shall I just let my local garage do it as it's cold and damp outside!
