1.4 Petrol BBY ECU Software Update

... They installed me 5246 (originally 4637) and I may go back and ask why the latest one which I thought was 5921 but now looks like you have a later one wasn't installed.... I originally thought mine was better after the update, but I think it has deteriorated again - probably because it has gone through a cycle of learns.

Am interested in "upgrading" my ECU to the latest firmware too, I'm based near Hatfield, so figure I'll give Hatfield Audi a call and see what they say, though I'm not going to hold my breath! My current software version says 4637 so I'm assuming that there is a much higher update. Does anybody know exactly what the update does and if it is worth it? I've just done a throtte body clean so I am thinking that now may be a good time to go for the update.

I have an AUA engine and asked about this at the main Audi Centre in Brentford, however their chief technician was unable to identify an update or service note of any sort.

I do wonder if the AUA engine mapping was the same for other VAG implementations, and if they are any better.. my main objective would be to reduce the poor low rev take-up, as it's not something easy to drive around!

Hi,

when browsing I came across a thread the other day on the German forum regarding an ECU update for the BBY 1.4 petrol engine. http://www.a2-freun.de/forum/showthread.php?t=28654

I have this engine and wondered where I would go to have the update installed in the UK? my ECU has the component number MARELLI 4MV G 4637 and therefore I think would benefit from the update.

Any thoughts?

Cheers Rob.
Does anyone knows the content of that update ? The link is too old.

I had a problem of car starting. Always from second attempt. Afterwards its starts ok but after 4-5 hours again always from second attempt. The problem was fuel pump. Engine BBY petrol.

Sorry for the revival of this, but the updates are both for BBY and AUA. Officially they do the following:

- Fix some "impossible" error codes. Some cars get errors code for sensors they don't have, these updates fix that
- Increase fault tolerances. The original fault tolerances were very tight, so as parts age you get errors, even though there isn't really a problem
- Add shutoff of air conditioning when starting off and at full throttle. This means you get maximum power when you need it.

Unofficially, but easily observed:
- New throttle pedal calibration - More sensitive
- Overall smother power delivery and better torque
- Reduced fuel consumption

Overall its a worthwhile update and makes a very noticeable difference.

I’ve finally got around to doing the clutch on my BBY, so when that’s done I’ll probably be looking for a garage that still has a VAS 5051 unit knocking around…

Hi,
How did you get it done, where and price? Thanks

The easiest option today is just to buy a new ECU that is already updated.
If you have a older AUA with a Q suffix ECU, that is your only option anyway.

I will be looking into developing a solution to update these ECU's with a VCDS cable. However, I have no timeline for this because it is very labour intensive.

I can’t help your question, but the first thing to do is to establish if your car is up to date or not (if you haven’t already).

On a VCDS scan of the ECU there should be a line displaying the ECU model and firmware version, looking something like this:
IMG_7241.jpeg

The ECU is MARELLI 4MV G, and the firmware version is the four digit number, in this case 4637.
The latest version is for the BBY engine is 5949, but I’m not sure about the AUA.

Latest AUA version is 7455.
So both of your cars would feel a difference with an update
You mentioned before that you might try writing some code to do the update via a laptop and VCDS cable via the OBD port, did that come to anything?

Still going… I need to find the motivation :)

So a Q ECU cannot be updated?

(Mine is 3720…)
