Chasing down rattles and squeaks

If your car is an early one before around 2002 it could be the webasto pre-heater unit. That is known to make noise from that area.

If that's for me - my car is 2003 06. So I don't have webasto fitted. Sound is like seat belt is trying to retract itself. And as I've said it is like buzzing sound. Maybe something in seatbelt tensioner? But I don't know if it is easy to remove that plastic cove and take a look.

There is nothing there that can buzz.

Have you got Sport seats? With Lumbar support?

It could be the motor running in the lumbar support if the switch became faulty??

Nope. Black cloth seats. Are we both talking about back seat seatbelt? When I put it to the C pillar there is no sound, but when somebody is using it or it is left not in C pillar there is such sound. It is quite quiet but that annoys me.

I thought you meant the front seat.
Under the rear seat is the fuel pump.
Remove the large round cover under the carpet and check to see if that is the source of your buzzing.

Hello all. Last mount mu car started to making buzzing noise.
The source off buzzing noise is around front shield passenger side under the dash board i thing.
Mi car is left hand drive. The buzzing noise comes only wen the car i accelerating between 2000 and 3000 rpm.
Any help will be nice that buzzing noise drives me nuts.

I've searched myself looking for a thread, with a guide showing how to tackle common rattles. My car has a few.

A very annoying rattle from the top of the fascia (dashboard) has been bothering me. By chance, I noticed it stopped when the sun visor was down. So it was just a vibration from that (hard plastic to hard plastic).
Moral of the story is that noises echo. They do not always come from where you expect them to be. That's all.

Someone needs to set up a "Call-out emergency rattle fixing" service!

I've currently got:
1. a buzz that comes from the steering column area which sounds a bit like an angry wasps' nest, but only when you're at pulling away from traffic lights/urban crawling stop/start kind of revs. V annoying. I hear this a lot.
2. a rattle that comes from the driver's side door card at about 40mph.
3. a buzz that comes from the passenger's side B pillar trim when using the phone via the RNS-E.
4. a vibration from I think the front left of the dashboard when pushing the engine a bit at around 1700RPM.

All of which seems to make the car feel more geriatric than it really is!
I have your number 1 also ... but apart from that buzzing that is related to low revs my interior is silent

This little job has been one of the most satisfying to complete so far on my TDi ; it cured an annoying rattle from all around the centre consol area.

I can highly recommend the effort in renewing the sealing strip between the air vent and the outlets !

I have a cold start whine buzz inside the dash area that sounds like a cockrell with bronchitis. Definitely not heater as I turn it off and on making no difference. Not auxillary pulley either...Does fade when hot though ....Heater matrix pipes maybe? Truly bizzarre...Did video but file size is 300 mb so too big to upload...Any ideas?

Hi Raymie, I was going to post the following in a new thread but have first searched and just seen your post - can you share a link to the foam strips that you bought so I can buy the same - similar dimensions?

“Hi all,

I’m just drawing up a list of jobs for a major inspection to celebrate Audrey hitting 170k miles (35k miles of which are mine) - one of them is to investigate a buzzing sound that emanates from the centre vents in sub-2k rpm / high-ish load situations.

It stops when I push firmly on the vents so I believe the issue is it’s not quite firmly seated enough when pushed / screwed home. Has anyone else experienced this and managed to fix it?

Thanks”

Hi David

I got some of this when I did mine last year

Pretty straight forward, @mtl has helpfully posted a video on his channel covering this

I have one last rattle that I would like to resolve. Well, I still have lots of rattles that I live with including:
Dashboard squeak during Winter, quiet in the Spring Summer and Autumn
Bonnet rattle, comes back when the tape over the corner catches wears
Glove box rattle as one of the lugs has broken. Ironically, a pair of gloves stuffed in the right place fixes it
Passenger door window got smashed and lots of glass that can't be retrieved rattles around when being shut

Squeaks and creaks over bumps - ARB bushes on the to-do list. Anyone got recommendations for these? 2002 Tdi Sport, trying to find the right part number.

But what I cannot work out is that when I go round a roundabout, not really quick I have a vibration noise (although I can't feel a vibration) that sounds like it's coming from the passenger side. As soon as I straighten up, it's gone. Better with a passenger in the seat. Nothing appears to be falling off and I haven't run over any pets or traffic wardens lately, so wondering if it also related to the bushes?

Hi Fiona,

Nearly all of these are fairly easily solved I think:
Bonnet rattle, comes back when the tape over the corner catches wears
I believe you can get these from Audi Tradition when @Rickmeister does his next group order? You'll need the part number and to check - if not then good used from the below sources would be my next bet.

Surely @A2Steve @Clackers or @Ami could help you with a replacement for that.

Have you tried taking the door card off and then the inner frame in order to get the hoover in there? It's not that hard I'm led to believe, if you take your time.

Do you mean the drop links? The standard forum "go to" brand is Meyle HD (NOT plain Meyle) - as these last a long time.

Almost certainly (based on my experience), either a duff wheel bearing or driveshaft. The way I check wheel bearings is by raising the front of the car off the ground securely, then running the car up through the gears to high RPM in top, then switching the engine off whilst putting the car in neutral and walking around to the front to listen to the sound of the bearings as the wheels free-wheel.

Your dash squeak could be a number of things, you'd need to supply more info.

Hope at least some of this is helpful.

Thank you. I've lived with most of the above so they don't really worry me to much, just part of the car and after 176k miles I think I'm just tuned into them!
The bonnet rattle only comes back rarely so I retape it during the annual service, it's become part of the service!
Yes, had the door apart recently to do the regulator but it's in a place where you just cannot reach - even with a specially adapted bit on the hoover. I remember it driving the Autoglass man nuts when he did it originally - tried everything including bits of sticky tape.
Interesting about the wheel bearing and driveshaft, will have a look, thanks.
Did the drop links recently, but at the service at the weekend my mechanical brother said everything looked OK, but the anti roll bar bushes showed signs of wear. TBH, never replaced them!

Hi Fiona:
If I can help with any glove box issues let me know,
Ami
