I have a car with a concert 2 and a car with a chorus 1, I’ll try swapping them over tomorrow and see if it works, I know not the same models as you’re asking about but if it works then I’d be quite confident yours will too

I believe it may not switch off when you take the keys out of the ignition but lets see

Evening,

A Chorus 1 requires an ignition lived for it to lower up. It also has a lights on type feed for button illumination. If your vehicle has full DIS then additional wiring is also required to enable the passage of the infotainment messaging (radio station name) to be displayed in the upper area of the red LCD DIS screen.

As your A2 came with a Chorus 2 then the power on and button illumination comes from CAN massaging. Your A2 will not have the necessary wiring for a plug and play affair but totally achievable if you really wanted to.

Kind regards,

Tom

Evening Tom, thanks for the info my car only has half DIS. I assume Concert 1 and Chorus 1 are the same wiring wise? I am looking for Concert 1.

another query came into my head mine is a non bose. are Concert 1 are bose and non bose is there a way to tell before buying the unit?

Evening,

There is no difference between Bose or non-Bose. Bose functionality is activated by coding and an additional earth for the Bose logo display at startup.

Kind regards,

Tom

Morning,

Below is an image to give you an understanding of the connectivity:

As your A2 doesn’t have full-DIS then all that is required for your chosen gen1 Chorus to work is the supply an ignition live and a lights on live feed to the Mini-ISO (head unit) connectors:

Chorus 1

Chorus 2

This should give you an idea of what you need to get full functionality of a gen1 head unit in a gen2 environment.

The lights on feed for button illumination can found within the headlight switch and probably could be taken from the ASR button or the 12v socket under the handbrake. The 12v ignition feed can be taken from the fuse box but can also be taken from a few other places too. Best to study the EWD and look for Terminal 15 (ignition/switched live) feeds.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Tom

A lot of the first generation headunits have issues. Screen pixellation is one, but the big killer is the fault whereby at some time, after enough volume adjustments have been made over its lifetime, the volume level no longer stores and the unit will only play at either 0 or MAX. No indication can be obtained of when that might be coming on any particular unit.

If you can get a Concert II, it's a straight swap for your Chorus II in terms of wiring connections, and supports a CD-changer and therefore all the Bluetooth emulators just the same.

Halfway through posting the same comment about the memory chip on the first generation Chorus and Concerts.
Mac.

Thanks everyone the main reason why I wanted to go for the 1st gen Concert was purely the look. I really like the central power and volume button. However the last few comments I think I’d be just chasing my tail. My existing radio buttons are wearing out so I thought I’d kill 2 birds…
Such a shame about the volume issue I believe there’s a fix by adding a component inside
But this idea is now shelved

Morning again,

I’m glad you’ve had a change of heart as reverting to a gen 1 head unit is certainly a step backwards. There are plenty of Concert 2 head unit’s out there which can be utilised for their buttons. Even if it comes from a different marque, it’ll still have the same button arrangement which can be inserted into your fascia to tidy it up. Keep checking eBay etc and pounce on a reasonably priced candidate.

You’ll need a set of precision screwdrivers that contains a Torx 6 (from memory) to conduct the fascia removal for a button swap.

Kind regards,

Tom

Does that mean that all A2s that came with the gen 2 head units have CAN bus?

I thought it was only very late (2005) models that use CAN bus

After poking around on VCDS I had concluded that my two 2003 cars (both with concert 2) did not, as I could not connect to the CAN gateway via VCDS, and the auto select function for make and model for auto scan did not work

Does anyone know of a fix for the screen?

All A2s, from the very first to the very last, have CAN bus. However, CAN isn’t used for the diagnostic system (hence your observations regarding VCDS auto-populating the controllers list).
The CAN gateway is integrated into the instrument cluster, hence why you got no response when trying to connect directly to the CAN gateway.

All A2s from 2002 onwards have CAN-based stereo head units.

As has been mentioned, the Generation 1 head units have a number of reliability issues. Although it is possible to install the necessary wiring to allow a 2002-or-later A2 to support the Generation 1 stereos, this is most definitely not recommended.
It is common for owners of pre-2002 A2s to have me install the necessary wiring to support Generation 2 head units, as these have greater functionality and greater reliability.

Cheers,

Timmus

Some of the later Concert 1 units were made my Matshuita in Japan. I think these may have been for A4 and A6, but the plug straight in and are the same size and front panel etc. I have installed one. It works perfectly. Just google concert 1 Matshuita (please check spelling) and look at the images and you will be able to see the rear heatsink is quite different. I can’t access a photo now, but I have posted on here about the install and a photo is attached. No reliability issues!!!!
I have 2 front panels for the blaupunkt ones if needed. Pretty sure they have full pixels. From volume issue units. Grrrr

just For clarity, plug straight into a non-canbus car. Wiring as previously recommended will be required.
