Gearbox cable adjustment

Hi Guys, I'm going to make an attempt at the gearbox cable adjustment to see if it sorts out the stiffness of gear selections.

I have tried to remove the gearbox stick surround but im in a pickle. Do I need to remove the side console panels to remove the full thing? I have got as far as taking the plastic tray out and pushing the cover upwards past the stick however what do I do next? I'm assuming I need to get the plastic cover off but don't want to create more work for myself. I've checked the YouTube video online and seems to be straight forward with inserting a 5mm drill bit into the gearstick area.

any help appreciated TIA

Re the drill bit - I've seen other advice suggesting a 5mm round wire long nail, with a bend put into it is a better idea as it stops the risk of the bit dropping through and disappearing somewhere into the nether regions of the console.

When my PTW was first fitted it was incredibly tight and obstructive to change gear. Car was parked up in neutral ; I released and then re-secured the cable ends at the gearbox end (without either gear lever or selector mechanisms locked in place) - and this was sufficient to resolve most of the tightness. I've explained this previously in that I had only just undone the cables when it started to pour with rain so I put everything back together and chucked the bonnet on before going inside ; afterwards I was able to use it without impediment so I've not touched it since.

Is it all movements of your gearlever that are difficult, or in one plane only? Was wondering in case this directs towards one of the cables of the pair to focus on.

It's all of the gears that are stiff. So can I adjust the cables without inserting the pin? Do I need to remove side panels and the black plastic square rubber cover in order for me to access the 5mm hole in gearbox?

Should I attempt it without locking it in place or will this lead to problems?

Thanks

I would just cut a small hole in the rubber boot at the bottom of the gearstick to access the locking point - it should be about 7 o'clock as such or that's where it is on my 1.4 petrol so I assume that they are all the same
You also need to try to lock the tower in place on top of the gearbox and that can be a bit more fiddly
Also make sure that the movement of the tower is free as well in case that is causing the stiffness
I couldn't select Reverse on mine so ended up having to replace the tower unit which restored all the gears
If you are using a 5mm drill bit they are actually a bit less than 5mm so don't give a tight fit so I ended up buying a short piece of actual 5mm steel bar on eBay for just a few £'s which gives a very good fit - just wrap some tape around the top to make sure it can't fall through and get stuck underneath
