Dear all out there in the A2-universe. 🌐

I'll soon embark on a voyage and welcome you along. it would be good to put a team together for it.

All welcome, there's plenty of space.

Whats the mission?
Codename: KA05-JYS
(Journey of Chaos)

A real time experiment, feel free to pitch in. join at any point in the mission until we reach journey's end. (Not in a pirate kind of way)

You may have seen the craft that will be our home for a month.

But Andy,.......why the odd thread title? Glad you asked....

It will be your job up to those reading to steer the quest with questions related to the tear down and rebuild process of the voyager vehicle.

Anything you are unsure about just ask. How, why, when, where, what?
I'll answer to the best of my ability.

Any questions from the floor? Just ask.

It would be interesting to see if a project thread could be self driven (like a Tesla), with minimal input from the driver (myself).

Good luck and God speed, let the journey commence.....

Thanks to those who have shared ideas on caring for an A2.

I have a question : why?
Why not?

Hi Joga, cool question.

Edit

I love a project thread but they follow the same format.

I could do it that way but someone else will have done it before and probably better than my attempt. Timmus engine building, Little Dog tdi restored all cool stuff.

Some people, (used to be me) read A2OC gather knowledge but don't make comments or posts. This is not a bad thing, purely an observation.

I thought this post could be an opportunity for everyone to put forward questions they may have via a PM or post on any A2 topic regarding an engine swap.

Hope this helped to shed a bit of light on the - why.

All the best πŸ‘

The AC has been on my mind. The doner car has AC but KA05 none.
I'll keep a photo record (Log) and let you know.

Edit
Skip to page three for the answer.

Oh, is the donor car mobile? Just wondering how you will recover the refrigerant? There is no incentive to keep it intact.

Hi Joga, nice to catch up with you and get to elaborate on the 'why' which was less philosophical and more practical.
I think this picture answered it best.

Last cambelt recorded at 160k. Car covered 258k.

Good question.
I'm going to reply with both ethics of car disposal/end of life and environmental impact in my thoughts.

I've bought 2 cars both sorn, I'm guessing too costly to repair.
The parts car has been sat for a number of years with a leaky tailgate water has filtered into the car.

The aircon I hope to pivot with the slam panel out the way. I'm fairly confident the condenser hoses go through it.
The coolant radiator and fan will be removed along with any other mass.

EDIT
Both cars will be delivered on a car transport trailer. When the parts car is here I will assess the damage.

EDIT
Aircon condenser metal hoses are on right hand side of picture

Looks like an interesting project, why not just change the cambelt, is it just a good opportunity as the engine is getting on, or did the belt snap?

Hi Indi,
The piston and valves may have collided.
The odometer reading is 258K, no record of engine replacement.

I think the water pump failed in use
20240128_210540.jpg

The water pump pully is no longer fixed to the side of the engine.
Edit 14/02/24
Metal shards found in coolant pipe at rear of engine

I don't but its outlasted the water pump it's got to be an Audi part.
I'll look tomorrow and edit this post with what I find:) πŸ‘

EDIT

It is a Gates Power Grip belt.

What garage tools, the big stuff, will you be making use of?
I will hire an engine hoist.
I have two trolley jacks and
two tool boxes with hand tools.

.These are a must.

EDIT
The two tool boxes

I would not want to be without this small socket set

Edit2
You could class the shed as a giant tool box..

Engine hoist was what I was looking for. I was hoping to avoid the cost or do the job without.
I managed a PB engine out and back in without a hoist. Gearbox came out first. Front of car came off. Then the engine came out in bits. Block sat on a motor bike stand. Engine reassembled in the engine bay. Gearbox back on.
I was planning AMF out the same way. Fully assembled engine back in is my challenge.

Edit. Your shed is tidy; you should see mine 🀣

Interestingly my son has recently bought a Polo. I was all over the service history looking for a belt change. I was told the service interval for a belt was changed to 130k miles the year before my son’s car. I need to check this out but I’ve been told by two sources now.

The hoist reason for
  1. safe working practice - avoid musculoskeletal injuries
  2. Minimal chance of damage to engine
Reason against
  1. Extra cost
  2. No room to manuver
I used to work in farming and forestry and have written risk assessments for some ressonably dangerous operations. The main aim was to preserve the people on the ground by minimising potential for harm. Protecting the 'operator' means there will still be an A2 project.
:) πŸ‘

EDIT
Sounds serious, but a bit of forwards planning on hazard avoidance and you got yourself a risk assessment πŸ‘

On a lighter note
Here ia a picture of a tractor about to muck spread wild flower meadow green hay. I miss this type of work it was great fun.
