Today I.....

Good Afternoon,

I am struggling like mad trying to identify a part I think I need for my front suspension rebuild.

It is some sort of clip that sits on the top of the main damper cylinder just above the "saucer", you can see it here

When fitted to strut

It's function is to secure the bottom of the dust cover (gaiter) otherwise the bottom of the dust cover surely will just flop around and not prevent the ingress of water and grime onto the shiny rod like this..

This image is from an excellent thread by @Little Dog,

It is vaguely shown in the 7zap strut diagram but not identified as a separate part which means I am stuffed.

Plenty of images on here of the front strut that show it but rarely mentioned except the above thread. The best image I can find and I can nearly read the part number.

I would like to check before the rebuild that this retainer fits the Bilstein B6 damper I have bought as nothing comes with it.

Anyone an idea on part number or a source???

Thanks.

Andy
Fairly certain mine came from the factory with the car. I just reuse them when I change struts.
They are not great and struggle to retain the gaiter when the car is lifted. You could probably get away without them.
The part number is not easy to get to. You need somebody who has one off the car.

One of the breakers on here?

Not today but a couple of days ago I went to the shops in Little Dog. All the parking spaces were taken so I parked him on a small hatched area at the end of a row.
I should have taken a picture, it was obvious A2s are tiny compared to just about every newer car. Strange though I don’t like I’m in a small car when I drive him.
He attracted a lot of attention; I suspect people were thinking that's small, I couldn’t have parked there.

Did a 280 mile round trip dash in Audrey yesterday, exactly what the car was bought for - no issues as always, fuel consumption in the high 60s as normal for a 70mph (according to CDIS) cruise, mostly using cruise control except on the steeper hilly sections of the A303.

Passed a 52 plate silver TDi on the way back driving west, otherwise no other A2s spotted.

Hello all,

Today I… Tidied up a new-to-me Soul auto dimming mirror (with compass) which arrived from Illinois like this:

After cleaning ended up like this:

After a some ti meting was left with quite a presentable result:

I’ll provide a more detailed write up on the Project EYV thread when I have more free time but quite happy with what has been achieved here. All the rare Soul parts for the interior colour change are slowly coming together.

Edit: More information at the below link:

Kind regards,

Tom

Replaced my high level led brake light today, as the original one had a few segments intermittently out. Can't believe how tight the clips on the Internal trim where, double-checked twice there wasn't a screw by the handle before putting more force into it.
If anybody is into repairing the faulty segments, the old ones here if anybody wants to pick it up or pay postage

Picked up some bits from the plumbers merchants

Betty swallowed 2750mm of 28mm copper pipe with closed boot. I was expecting to chop off a lot more off than that. Impressed, again by the little A2

Yes, I frequently put 3m lengof copper pipe and waste pipe in mine and rest the boot shut

Today I have had both wishbones delivered for Project PQ25.
Looks like I've a bit in front of me to do at some stage.

Today I went out into the garden and realised that there are just far too many toys in the garden. We have gained a well known one, and are losing the black one tomorrow 😀

Morning all,

Today I… Well after last night’s acquisition (2 posts above) you can probably guess what I’ve started. Of course the key to success in any task is the preparation so just had the Rug Doctor out again to wash 4 carpets. Nice and clean just in time for the sun to reach them to dry out before this afternoons activities:

It’s quite astonishing how much dirt can remain in the carpets after a thorough vacuuming. These will be smelling rather fresh ready to be fitted into a certain Jaipur Red A2.

Kind regards,

Tom

Today I changed my 10 year expired tyre sealant. It was noted by B&F as expired on last year's service. The genuine Audi sealant is so expensive, but the paperwork trails to Terra-S in Germany. They make it for many OEMs including Audi. Two sizes, 450ml and 700ml, I think the 450ml covers small car tyres but 700ml covers up to SUVs. Purchased for £24.80, expiry date to 24 August 2028 so I can be assured of years of worry free driving in case of a puncture. Key benefit this Terra-S bottle fits the A2 foam tool holder, perhaps cheaper alternatves don't. See below the old white sealant and the new Terra-S bottle.

A day of firsts for me. The orange thing has been in the sky for a few days and had a tiny window to do some car stuff. So first time removing the A pillar trim for me to run some cabling for the seat lumbar supports. First time making up a bit of wiring which I had done earlier in the year. Got it as far as the rear centre console. Stripping out this will be another first for tomorrow.

Tidy work!

... Fitted a new service flap position switch, in a desperate attempt to extinguish the oil warning. Hopes were high when I noticed that the cable connection was not secure and someone had glued the switch in place! But no, new switch works, but oil warning still on. Then changed the cabin air filter... Which was absolutely filthy.
