Why do you like the A2?

Hello A2O

So I've currently got a smart car, but it's obvs just a bit too small, so looking for a replacement car, after my A2 1.6 went wrong. What's the first car I went looking for? A2!
I want to know why we all keep going back to the A2 and after the A2, has anyone got a better replacement.
Like this car is soo old now! ;)

Just a general fun post.!

Also I have moved to EU does anyone have any knowledge of finding an A2 in EU please? Looking for a 'leftie' drive!

I like the fact that I don't have to worry about body corrosion so I can focus on everything else. :)
Also, a lot fits inside for such a small car, and it has proven to be very reliable during the past 15 months of ownership, so there's that.

I have to say, when I got my 1.6Fsi Sport, I really didn't like driving it at all. The seat position I just couldn't get right. The position of the switches really irked me. Particularly having the light switch not on the stalk, and out of sight.
The sound of rain on the very thin aluminium roof was (and still is) much too loud.
The suspension is much too harsh IMO. It was more harsh before I fitted new, and slightly wider 17 inch tyres.
The lack of arm rest!

This was after (and still) driving my Rover 800 Coupe for around 16 years. Its not just muscle memory, it's some of the design. I have enjoyed driving a variety of small to medium rental cars when abroad.

I spent ages fiddling with seating positions until I found a comfortable one, and now actually enjoy driving it. Especially with a heavy right foot.....
The light switch still annoys me, as does the roof and suspension sometimes.

It now has an arm rest, and makes such a difference to the driving.

I love the secret stash places in the front floor pan, and have now also got a false floor kit to fit.
I do like the look of it. Especially in Metallic Black. It hides the black trim bottom. Ironically, something my 800 Coupe has too, and I don't like that on it either.

I got an A2 because I was looking for a quirky enough car that fits the criteria for first year drivers (neopatentati) in Italy.
Being a VW relative, parts are relatively available. (though after 1,5 years of joyful ownership, I now enter a period of something constantly going wrong and it is a bit stressful)
Being a 00s Audi, it has a well-designed interior where you like to stay.
Being lightweight, it is a blast to drive even with 75hp.
Being also aerodynamic, fuel consumption ranges from pleasantly to absurdly low depending on how hard you drive (which is a strong point considering fuel prices these days).

At this point, I see the problem of having an A2 as a first car, because if I want to try something else, I have to consider a second car.

A2’s just get under our skin don’t they? - so unique in so many ways.

Where did you move to? I can help with tips on EU buying.

Mobile.de or autoscout24.com are probably the main sites to look for used cars in general 🤔

I bought mine A2 because of Al body. I had Sharan before it and rust was one of its few puzzle pieces of death. So rust free body was the main selling point. Otherwise I would choose something else from Fabia/Polo/Ibiza/A2 family. Now I like its quirky features and the fact it starts to be quite unique sight on the streets nowdays 👌

Evening,

My simple answer to the threads title is what’s not to like about them. I for one have this picture when I open the front door:

Kind regards,

I love the fact that you can spend a load on a respray and basically don’t have to worry about it for a long time. Also I love the facts that my mates all say I’m a weirdo (non believers) lol. But the character of the car is 2nd to none also you can do so much to them to improve them. This is how my drive looked a couple of month ago. It’s actually still similar and my mes loves it(NOT)

Ultimately rust is what ends up killing most old cars. Peripherals are generally replaceable. Well maintained diesel engines can go on for 350k+ miles. The A2 is the first car that I think of a bit like a house: sure there is wear and tear but when something goes wrong I just fix it and continue to enjoy it until the next thing needs attention. After all we don't throw our houses away after a certain number of years.

No rust for me. Every car that I have loved in the past I have let go due to rust…..Datsun 240k, sunbeam 1600ti, golf gti, and an amazing Mercedes 190D, all startonrist in nasty places and made me sell. The 190 had done 400k and was my favourite. I look at my A2 as I do my series Landrover….galv chassis, ally body, bolt on bits.😀

They're definitely a happy little buggy, stand out design, frugal, versatile, nicely weighted steering and controls makes for a pleasant driving experience, sure can be a little crashy but taught aluminium chassis is also entertaining

It's a great hobby car. I can fix pretty much everything on the car myself while enjoying the "restoration" at the same time. Dead cheap to run. 1.4 TDI not petrol versions. Also with good maintanace can go to 500k miles. Find me another alu car which can do the same.

Yeah, not a Lotus Exige, I can testify to that having just had to do an engine out refresh at 20k miles....

The fact that it was designed by engineers and form follows function rather that just a jumble of ideas. The build quality and aluminium space frame, the way body panels are replaceable, the light weight, the forum!

George.

I like that Audi were trying to do something different, and build the best car they could, rather than sticking with the tried and tested formula.
I like the engineering and design, resulting in an awesome little package, the aluminium reducing both corrosion and weight, practical, spacious, economical, comfy enough for longer trips, fun to drive, plenty of other fun and interesting little quirks…

The looks have grown on me a lot too 😂

Trip this weekend with a full car, all four of us six foot or taller, awesome packaging for a car this size (even if the rear suspension wasn’t too happy)

And also one of the main reasons is the A2oc, I suspect I may not have ended up with three of them were it not for the excellent community here!
