TDi rough starting with smoke..

After the PITA job of doing the cambelt and waterpump, back to the problem I had just before doing that.
Takes a bit longer to start, idles lumpy, feels a bit like on 2 cylinders, fair bit of smoke (also had the oil level light come on this morning! even tho its fine) Once on the move all is well. I also noticed it uses more fuel than normal.
I've read a few threads with similar problems, them being:
Injector problem
Injector loom
Camshaft sensor
Crankshaft sensor

I can cross camshaft sensor off as I replaced that while doing cambelt, so next stop plug in the reader and see if anything comes up, if not then injector cleaner!
I had a bit of wiring loom fail a while ago, that goes to the brake pad wear thingy on the pads.

Any thoughts chaps?

Starting could be as simple as a glow plug, but it does sound a little more like an injector problem.

If it was running on 2 cylinders I would say definitely the injector loom, however you would have a warning alarm and alert on the display? Switching engine off and on again resets and temporarily solves that issue. Same if an injector really had gone, so I think you can cross those off your list at least.

Just read another thread regarding a dipstick with the end breaking off in the sump potentially causing damage to the crank sensor ring??
My dipstick end broke off just before christmas, maybe a cm or so.. could this be the culprit?

Possibly but there must be an awful lot of broken bits of dipstick in the bottom of sumps (mine has 2 in it). It's just a piece of plastic, so it's very likely to either mashed or just sink to the bottom or get caught in the pickup strainer (assuming there is one).

Just stuck in a bottle of injector cleaner (cheapest option first!) started it up and the same smoke, lumpy idle to start with and again the oil level light flashed on and beeped.. weird, again, oil level is fine.
No codes generated, although I just have a cheap code reader.
hmmmmmm..........

Maybe you need to run a tank with the cleaner in it through to see if it helps. Alternatively you can pull the hoses of and run cleaner in directly bypassing the fuel storage system entirely. Moly purge or something? Depronman (Paul) had just posted about buying a can of it a few days ago...

It only happens when car is cold, so could well be a glowplug I suppose, thanks!
As a quite feasible solution, I've only gone and ordered some glow plugs, any special tools needed to fit, or just sockets?

No special tools needed but ensure you have the right type and be very careful when removing as they can snap. Best to soak them in release agent for a few days before attempting the job and be very gentle when loosening off.

If your removing glow plugs, as above get them ready for removal with a penetrant/release fluid. But also do it when they're warm. And be very careful.

If this doesn't solve your problems I might be looking at replacing the injector seals and inspecting the injector bore for any wear.

Thanks for the tips, doused the plugs with wd40 this lunchtime, do the same tonight and tomorrow! had a look to find the glow plug relay under the passenger carpet/panel, mine is marked '614' but seems to click on ok, then a timed click off a few seconds later.

Does it start any better if you give it a couple of goes on the glowplugs before actual starting?

Not at all.
When this starting problem first happened was probably the first time ever I haven't waited for the glow light to go out before starting. Could this have possible killed the glow plug(s) and/or relay?
edit.. possibly not killed relay as the in dash glow light still works!

Correct glow plug? There are different types for different voltages.
