Project 1.4 se day one

Than you for the question, my post you quoted was a little lazy and deserved some rationale:

Tyre reviews website - These tyres were not really much good compared to their competition when tested in 2013/14. Perhaps demanding they be lobbed them in a skip was a bit OTT considering that as has been pointed out, they are new - plus they are indeed better than the usual “death ring” quality of Chinese tyre - although I would still want to be on something better in a wet emergency stop / swerve situation.

As a rule budget and Chinese tyres in general are a big no-no for me, but then I have quite a narrow view in tyres that means I only ever buy the best I can (Michelin, GY, Continental etc.). I would never forgive myself if I cause injury (or worse) to someone else because I couldn’t stop in time and there was even a chance that I could have on top quality rubber - and let‘s face it, on an A2 the sizes required means even the best are not ruinously expensive ultra large / low profile like those on most modern premium cars these days.

Tyre choice / attitudes are a bit like religion in that people feel quite strongly on the subject and are usually fairly entrenched in their view, so let’s not swerve the thread too wildly here; however this is this the thinking behind my request to @Darpod14 .
I think you make a very valid point here, I always try and pick the best of every part I can afford on my cars, not just tyres as I guess most of us do, certainly in the case of our beloved a2s. I wasn’t being dismissive of your suggestion, just jokingly!

Hi.
Looks like a very good buy, excellent spec and apart from general wear and tare (the car is no spring chicken) looks a very tidy example. Just a quick note on tyres my wife purchased a used 16 plate polo tdi from Vw and they fitted x4 new landsail tyres to it! Covered over 14k and just changed the fronts.
Good luck on your A2 journey.
Steve

It was a trade off between buying a lesser spec in better cosmetic condition then trying to add the things I wanted to my car or working out what it would cost to make this car look as I would like for a reasonable cost. I’m sure most of us use this rationale with our cars. In the end the mileage, history, owners and the (currently working! ?) spec made me go for it. Time will tell if I made the right decision! The tyres will just be a stop gap for me, but are a down my list ? of things to sort!

Wise choice. Bose alone is one of the best upgrades to have. You have three of the top ten must haves IMO. Bose, open sky and rear electric windows. As said wear and tare to interior switches surrounds etc can easily be rectified and will make a massive difference. There is a wealth of knowledge, experience and parts knowledge on this forum. And everyone is very friendly, brought together by the love of this quirky baby audi. Have you felt your car move yet with your windscreen wiper on? And the aircon is superb!

Not been in rain yet! What I like seeing so far on here is how people go so far out of their way and take great pleasure in helping others! Also the super fair prices that are asked for parts is super refreshing and makes me so glad I chose, after many years looking from afar the a2!

It looks a great base car to improve a little on the cosmetic side

But that can be done over time as money and parts become available
As for the landsail tyres I have used them for a number of years and can’t fault them they grip well in wet and dry and wear well

Enjoy you new to A2

It’ll be interior trim mainly Paul over however long it takes! I’m keeping it as oem as possible, just personal preference. So just need to confirm interior trim colour, also maybe a change of head unit, but needs to be Bose compatible.

Your interior is Swing, the only grey available at the time that car was ordered. It was discontinued in the next model year when Soul (black) and Platinum (pale grey) came out. Swing trim parts are neither particularly sought after nor offered for sale very often. @A2Steve or one of our other breakers would be your best bet if an early car comes in at end of life. Failing that, since the black dashboard and pale grey roof and A+D pillar linings in your car were common to all interiors except Twist beige, you have plenty of opportunity to mix and match from the Soul and Platinum colour schemes as you replace worn trim items, to create a unique interior of your own.

The headunit will be more difficult to do anything about. Non-OEM headunits don't play well with BOSE, if at all. In terms of OEM possibilities, the Chorus II headunit that the car has now is not the one that would have come with it originally. That was probably a Concert I which was also a radio/cassette. Assuming that a CANBUS modification was done to the to support the second-generation headunit it has now, the only other single-DIN choice is the Concert II radio/CD. But the sound-processing internals of the two units are probably much the same, and with a 6CD changer in the boot, would you need to do this? The only advantage I could see would be that you could take the CD changer offline, fit a Bluetooth adapter into its input socket in the headunit for music streaming and hands-free, but still be able to play CD's one at a time.

The only real OEM ICE upgrade you could do would be convert the dash to double-DIN with the appropriate cage, and fit an Audi RNS-E. As well as providing navigation on-screen and with directions in your DIS display, it plays music from SD (Mk1) or SDHC (Mk2) cards, works with the CD changer and can be coded for BOSE. It has its own internal pre-amplifier so it is a step up in sound quality, even before you put that output through BOSE. It has a separate AUX-in to which you can attach a bluetooth adapter for streaming at least, but I'm not sure where hands-free comes into that picture - I don't do phones in cars so I don't have one on mine. The man to talk to about a dash and RNS-E retrofit and all aspects of trim, electrical or ICE is Tom @timmus, legend of this club. Lucky you, he's in Lancaster so not a huge distance away :)

Some really good info here, thanks so much!
I never thought about mix and matching the interior, really interesting idea. I don’t really fancy the dash change option, as good as it looks and I like the original look of the interior and wouldn’t put a non Audi head unit in. Maybe the old school cassette adapter might be an option ? I will definitely speak to Tom and see about an electrics check over and some other bits. Cheers!

Pretty much every tyre has to pass safety tests so you buy the brand that suits your budget.
Those checks, needed to get the CE mark, are, often, achieved by "self assessment" So, a cheap tyre, from a far off land, maybe CE marked, same as the premium brands, but, the "testing" behind it could be "suspect".
Do a bit of research, they're not all bad though.
Mac.

I'd keep to an OEM radio myself, for originality.
The Chorus II and Concert II are not bad units. Don't forget that because the car has Bose, only the line/phono outputs are used, to feed the Bose amp, which, in turn drives all the speakers. So, since much of the technology (and cost) in an aftermarket radio is in the power/output stages, a lot of what you're paying for is not required with Bose.
Unless you want DAB, consider a good Bluetooth adaptor, and use your phone as the source for music, navigation, hands free calls and Internet radio.
Just my opinion. Other opinions are available!

Thanks Mac, appreciated! I’m not bothered about dab so I think Bluetooth adapter is the way to go. I don’t know much about them, so any input would be cool, and much google searching!

you would loose the CD changer as the BT adapter uses the CD changer of the head unit, but as stated above the convert II is a single CD / Radio unit so you would not be loosing all access to CD's (if that is a concern)

Hmm ? ok, not that I use cds, but not sure I like the idea of a defunct 6 disc in the boot...

If you don't use the CD function, why not remove the changer, and either sell it, or retain it for if or when you sell the car. They are known to fail, as they are getting on a bit now. Check it out, has it got the 6 disc cassette, and if so, does it actually work?

Few of us here are very happy with Xcarlink BT adapter, which allows you to stream music from your smart phone and hands free calls

Fully works, would mean some removal/replacement panels in boot, will have a look
