Today I.....

Currently on 541 miles on trip computer and fuel light isn't on yet... wonder how close to 600 miles I can get from the tank before I have to fill up! Managed 520 miles on my last tank
I had previously assumed that from the light first coming on that it's around 6.7 litres (1½ imp gallons) in the tank. By running it till empty I think it may be as much as 9 litres (2 imp gallons).

My low fuel warning came on earlier in the week after 505 miles. It's a 2004 75 TDI. I know it can go much further but I have never driven it till I run out. So last night I went out with a spare fuel tank with 4 litres of fuel in. It stopped at 617 miles and luckily right next to a BP garage. 49.75 litres (including 4 l from the spare fuel cannister) and I'm totally full and off I go. More confidence in my range now and that the low fuel light gives be approximately another 100 miles.
But £98.89 for a refuel was a shock!
And that's at just 56mpg, which any TDI75 should be capable of given some long running in the mix. At the 64mpg that I got from my 2002 TDI on today's brim-full (my usual weekly round, not trying particularly hard for economy), that would take it just over 700 miles. Sadly I don't have the 42L tank but I reckon I'm still good for 600 miles from my 34L if I have to, given how much extra room there is above the nominal tank capacity.

Good shout to actually test this 👍 I don't recall seeing that done anywhere else.

So today.... my wife was driving one of our A2's and someone pulled out in front of her from a junction. So totally not her fault and the other person admits fault, there insurance company (LV) are even wanting to repair our vehicle as they are admitting liability. I have spoken to our insurance and based on what I told them of the damage there system says our vehicle is repairable (im worried they will get the vehicle and then say its not!). At this point I have 3 options.
1 Get the third parties insurance to repair (then my insurance cant help!), this option im less keen on.
2 use repairer network provided by our insurance (Auxillus)
3 have our insurance (admiral) repair it.

Attached is a photo of the damage (the other vehicle came off far worse, both passenger doors caved in, side curtain air bags deployed), its not clear on the photo but there is now a gap between the bonnet and wing and headlights pushed back. I am really hoping the insurance is right and they can repair it! If they say its beyond economical repair I need to do some research into what is an acceptable value? It has the Open Sky roof (working!) and optional Factory Tow Bar (ive never used it):

So finally got the news from the insurers on how they are proceeding. We had to take it to one of there repairers who looked at it for 10 minutes and then sent us home with the car. Has taken a couple of weeks for them to now come back and say its a total loss (CAT N). After some negotiating they have come back with a decent offer (there initial offer was an insult!). We can buy the car back off them for the salvage value. So might be on the lookup for some parts etc.

That's the result you needed in order to progress - glad the car's stayed with you, hope your search turns up some results.

Today I took her to a car show. Of the few hundred cars the only one in aluminium but i don´t think any one noticed this gem :)

Yesterday I posted about the dangers of dash boards melting in the heat and that I had covered mine with white foam board.

Today I get into the A2 and see this:

Obviously tempting fate with my posting ;) If I recall correctly folks here have had problems trying to neatly fix a sagging headline. May have to bite the bullet and get a professional.

Oh boy, be good to see how you go about sorting it out. Everyone’s nightmare (well it’s on the nightmare list!)

Wow you really are cracking on with this. Be interested in how the gearbox oil change goes. Mine is the same age but less miles and had been thinking it might be a good move to change the gearbox oil as I doubt it has ever been changed. Bit worried about the drain and filler plugs being in pretty solid

Drain plug was not a problem, hopefully also input plug :).
I was surprised in how good “look” the gearbox oil was. I expected to be completelly black. Though my car has only 109.000 km. Still, the difference is obvious.
1.1l was drained out.

I used Tesa spray glue as a temporary solution.

Anyway, fill plug no problem. :)
But there was a different inconsistency: 1.1l of oil was drained out, but he managed to fill in 1.9l of oil until overflow from the fill in plug (1.9l is also factory spec for this transmission). And there were NO leaks  on the engine or transmission.
I would really like to know what happened with the rest of the oil. If nothing else, it should change gears smoother. Hopefully there was no damage to the gearbox...

Today had to refuel and at last - after 4 years - getting a decent fuel consumption:

Fuel Spreadsheet Oct 2018 to July 2022.jpg

62.4 mpg / 4.6 L/100km over 617 miles / 45 litres. It's a remapped 1.4 75 TDi with longer 5th gear.

Over the pandemic the A2 was hardly used and then only for short journeys. Consumption is measured red line buzzer to red line buzzer. Using eyeball estimate I reckon on one long journey at c60 mph I was getting over 70mpg, but it was 16 years ago I last had 70mpg between fills.

The fuel over recent years has been mainly Texeco Supreme. Expensive, but better on the engine when doing mostly shorter journey.
