Help/advice please ... my alarm is going off and can't stop it!

Help please! my alarm is going off and can't get it to stop. Went to the shops earlier and came back to find the alarm going off, for no reason. Drove off and stopped off at the supermarket, locked the car started walking away and the alarm started again.
The lights are not flashing with the alarm.
The door diode is normal, but after about one minute it stops it's normal steady flash, goes static red and the alarm starts.
Is there anything I can do to stop the alarm?
Thank's in advance,
Heather

First thing I would try is to unplug the plunger switch on the service flap accessed by removing bonnet this means the car always thinks the service flap is closed and secure so you need to make sure yourself the flap is locked and secure as the car won't be able to tell you. If this cures it I found a pound shop self adhesive circle cut to size and stuck on back of service flap to enable the plunger to be fully depressed and car happy!

It's possible/likely that the internal battery in your alarm sounder has stopped functioning. They're a few years old even on the newest A2. There's a few people on here can help with that, or provide a replacement unit in functioning order.

Thank's Howey,
The alarm randomly went off like this about 10 years ago and advice from the good folk on here suggested the service flap may be the cause. I remember me and my Dad out the front in the dark disconnecting something like what you have suggested.
Earlier, I opened/closed the service flap and all seemed to be secure.
I thought the problem had sorted itself out, as it had all gone quiet for about 20 mins or so, but then it started again, now quiet again for the last half an hour.

Timmus replaced some sort of interior sensor last time (behind the grille near to the interior mirror). Maybe it's that at fault again.

Still quiet .......

Thank's Murdo, It would be good to get that checked out.

Check with diagnostics what the issue is. It should be saved in the fault codes.
Until you solve it, you can also deactivate alarm via diagnostics. I do this through the winter, when I do not use the car, to lower the battery drain.
I also had faulty interior sensor, but this did not make the alarm to go off, actually it was the opposite. It would not go off :).

Evening Heather,

I’m not too far away from you and more than happy to assist with a scan to see if the fault can be narrowed down. You’re probably only half hour away from me so drop me a PM if your interested and I’ll supply my address.

Kind regards,

Tom

Hi Heather,

I hope all's well with you.

A quick diagnostic question....
When the alarm is going off, are the indicators flashing, or is the car just making the beeping alarm noise with no flashing indicators?

Cheers,

Tom

Thank's for the tip. It was all quiet until it just started to get light this morning, then went off again for a few cycles and now quiet again since.

Thanks Tom, that would be great!. We've just had a quiet 24 hours or so, but I was just reading your post and as if by magic off it goes again!!!. Will send you a PM.

Thanks, Heather

Morning Tom,

Hope that you are well. No flashing lights, just the beeping. It's been quiet for over 24 hours, but started again in the last half hour!

Brilliant, thanks for the additional information.

This is a clear indication that the sounder unit itself has failed. The alarm isn’t actually going off; the sounder unit has just lost its mind and so makes noise for fun.

In the immediate term, it just needs to be unplugged, but a replacement will be needed in order to reinstate full functionality.

Likewise, I hope all is well with you.

Thank's Tom, it certainly was having a lot of fun this afternoon, while I was losing my mind!!.

How would I go about unplugging it please? ... and are replacements readily available?

The door diodes are going a bit out of sinc with it staying solid red for a while longer before starting to flash. The loud single bleep (which you made happen last time you fixed my car) which happens when the car is locked is also occasionally absent.

I'm doing good now thanks after my coronary artery decided to spontaneously dissect back in September!

Unplugging the window sensor wouldn't work, at least if it's windows sensor related, the alarm has a backup system, which probably still works, so the whole alarm module has to be disconnected. There can be many reasons, I used to get the same issue as well, until the scan you'd leave the car unlocked, so the alarm won't go off.

Morning Heather,

I’ll be able to unplug the alarm module when you swing by later today. I’d also be more than happy to fit the replacement module when you get one.

It could be worth placing a wanted advertisement for an alarm module soonest to see who has got one available. If you was able to secure one by this afternoon (@A2Steve, @Clackers, @Ami) then I could be tempted to remove the module from one of the fleet and fit it to your A2, leaving you fault free. The caveat would be for your replacement module to be sent to me so I can get the donor car back to the way it was.

This will of course save a second trip to sunny Coalville.

We can discuss it this afternoon.

Kind regards,

Tom

If the problem is the siren itself, you need to disconnect it. Discussed above.
If it is the alarm itself, I would just code it off in 46 module (factory number - 10). That should hopefully deactivate it.

Evening all,

On behalf of Heather (great to meet you earlier) I can confirm the issue was indeed the alarm module/sounder unit being at fault. Due to recent water ingress the contact pins inside the connector aperture were heavily corroded. It has been removed and a replacement item is being searched for in the background to quickly have full functionality restored.

Kind regards,

Tom

Would you still get the alarm churp upon locking if the alarm was turned off?
