Weight distribution fix

Today there was an outstanding job to do.
Rear bumper off and apply sealant around both vents to stop water entering into the boot area, noticed after the OSS has been fixed which had a leak into the similar area.
Decided to give everything a bit of a clean while at it.
For an all aluminium car the rear is a surprise two very heavy blocks with a metal bar between them.
Must weight 20-30 Kg I presume for handling / braking.
Not unusual in cars. The Mk1 TT has a similar weight behind the rear bumper. Yes, part of the whole weight distribution and handling package.
Mac.

Today I visited my son in Devon. was going to go by train but got to Westbury station mid morning and all 350 spaces taken. I was reading that rail travel is down to 75% of pre-pandemic. Last time I went it was 1/2 empty. Maybe people have been forced to work back in the office.

So I drove - 100 mls in 2.5 hrs - bit longer than usual due to traffic and many roadworks. When I pulled into the pub for lunch my son said "anyone could think you were driving a newish modern car."

On the way home stopped at Colyford for some fuel but they were out of fuel ;)

With 70 miles to go and a 1/4 tank (5L to the red mark/buzzer) I decided to see if I could make it home. Drove at 55 max and I have a long 5th gear. I got back without the buzzer going. I think this last fill of 30L will return 61mpg+ including local driving.

Colyford is about 4-5 miles from me.

You have about 80-100 miles of usable range past 0 miles range indicated - so no surprise you made it!

Yes, I knew IF the buzzer went I would have at least 50miles but no point in sucking up the dregs and clogging the filter. I normally fill after the buzzer goes when it's convenient but note the mileage at the buzzer to calculate mpg.

I was surprised it didn't quite make the buzzer from a 1/4 tank mark but then these markers are not that accurate. e.g. red line + 30L is almost on full yet it is a 42L tank (from memory). Driving at 70+ certainly makes a noticeable difference to mpg.

If I fill up with say 50 miles range left, even with the burp toggle I cannot get 40l in. This means there is therefore around a gallon and a half left in the tank (as the tank is actually closer to 47.5 litres total capacity).

I now routinely treat the buzzer as a suggestion to fuel when I next pass the cheapest fuel station(s) in my area, as opposed to a warning that I’m low on fuel.

Has anyone taken off the steel weights and replaced them with presumably alloy spacer? I find it difficult to see how a couple of kg could make a positive difference to handling in a Tdi… but happy to be educated otherwise

So after many months of coding my 15 year son Theo has released a snippet of a Multimedia Car Chase game he has been working on onto YouTube featuring the A2.🚗
Players will be able to chose various settings, colours with a auto number plate pick so no two are the same, all lights work and damage to various parts can vary depending on speed and collisions. Beware of the train crossing! 🚆

Please take a look, like, comment, share & subscribe as he has put the hours in & could do with some feedback and would appreciate your help.

Thanks, Stan

Not into computer games, but this must take unknown hours of work, very well done.

Today I had a Spoiler day. Jelly got a Votex tailgate wing, boy thats a tight fit, even without Tiger Seal. Cannot see it coming off now!
Smurf was also treated to my homemade tailgate wing. This was screwed due to it being slightly bowed, and stuck with Tiger Seal. Filled the screw holes, now for more filling, sanding, filling, sanding!
Whilst waiting for everything to set, I blew over the Rear Bumper, and Front n Rear Votex Skirts with colour coat.
Let the paint go off, then a gentle rub down, and laquer coats.
Cuppa tea time!

Evening Bob,

A busy but productive day Sir. Looking forward to some pictures of the recent works.

PS: Did you make a spare spoiler which happened to be finished off in Jaipur Red?

Kind regards,

Tom

Lol, sorry no. The custom spoiler is for Smurf, my FSI. The main body is a cut down Skoda Kodiaq unit, been in the garage for years. The front face was filled/straightened by grafting 5mm perspex to it. The end caps are 3x 5mm perspex profiles glued together, shaped, then glued n screwed to the main body.
Then I decided it was too big and looked a bit chavvy. Cut 25mm off the forward edge, and end caps, which meant re-profiling them to follow the body contour. I dropped a gooly, cutting the spoiler body too near the glass width, so overall its wider than a standard Votex. Just meant lots more hours filling n sanding!
Looks a right mess now, having filled the screw holes, and sanded over them.

Today was oil change day, Millers flush and oil, a Bosch filter, new copper washer. Lost the light so will fit the under tray back on tomorrow morning as I expect the weather will stop me doing much more under the car this year.

That's great DIY skills

Almost all of Today, I:

Replaced one, ONE! front shock absorber on the drivers side of my TDI75.

Before I go any further, that has to be in the top 3 hardest jobs I've ever done on any car. I've found doing a top engine rebuild, and replacing a clutch on a mini easier. I'll have to be completely honest - there was a moment where I was afraid I would have to call a mobile mechanic, or get a low loader to come take the car away. Nothing would ever convince me to ever try that (on the drivers side) again. I am not looking forward to the passenger side tomorrow.

seaside car, everything corroded (brakes discs+pads were done a month ago)

Obligatory shot of the terribly placed brake reservoir

Guess what those two things on the left are:

Captive nuts ripped right off!

1695495957455.png

Total nightmare trying to get leverage on the nuts from underneath, while trying to stop the top spinning

1695496023700.png

The only way I could get something on the nut - had to bang it on with a hammer as the nut fouls the top mount.

Also had to cut the track rod end off - luckily I have new meyle ones in the garage.

Off the car - the strut was gushing fluid out of a rotten part of the damper (yellow arrow). I decided to reuse the bump stop, rather than a new Bilstein one - the OEM was about 6cm tall, and the Bilstein ~9.5cm. I OEM one was in good shape, and I didn't think that adding a huge bump stop would be a good idea.

All in all, 1/10 - would not recommend.
