best performance mod

Nope - the intercooler isn't a limiting factor so there's no benefit to be gained from changing it.

Cheers

So just a remap nothing else

cheers for the info

Decat and a stainless exhaust, but how much do you want to spend ? oh yes a K&N will give a little bit extra not a lot (in the words of Paul Daniels lol), But you did ask for the best performance mod and that on its own is the best (remap)

Phil

There is a school of thought that says a de-cat is actually counter productive for the 75 - I know that one member has re-instated their cat even though it allowed quicker spool up times.

Cheers,

Mike

A remap from stealth around £265 for forum members. Expect to see around 100bhp from the 75 engine.

Does anyone know how the remap creates more power? Does it increase emissions? Increase fuel consumption?

Is there any detrimental effects? is it likely to decrease other components life?

Is it possible to have a super economy remap? Like in F1 when there following the safety car!

I appreciate that these questions should probably be directed to Stealth, but I guess a lot of people on here have 1st hand experience of the remap.

What are people experiences with failures, MPG and performance (BHP) on the 75bhp tdi.

Nick

hmm... if a remap essentially optimises the fuel / air ratio for as much power / torque as possible for this particular engine and these external conditions (i.e the UK and this particular fuel), then it is the economy remap.

Decrease component life? Of course. But what and by how much is an answer in the stars. Gearbox? probably. It might only last 300000 miles now. Clutch is more likely to go, but again the numbers say "it doesn't really matter" IMO.

The MPG numbers are all over the site.

Bret

IIRC, 5th Gear did a 'test' before. They took a polo 1.4 tdi and got revo to perform a so-called 'economy' remap. I remember they tested it with the same car before and after on an oval at constant (50mph?) speed only and there was virtually no difference. Read that with a pinch of salt as usual.

If what you mean by performance is put your foot down and it goes, then as others say, a remap. Otherwise FSD improves overall handling quite a lot and if you want good cornering speed, some very sticky rubber will be better than a remap stuck with skinny tyres. Or else, get some very light weight alloy wheels.

at constant there will be little difference, it's teh "more power" means less time at full power therefore better economy.

In town it should make a difference but it won't be that great.

Add the 3l underbody spoiler, flatten out the rest of the underbody. Drop to 165/65R15 on superlight rims.

Bret

Thank you for the responses.

I find the standard 75BHP more than adequate, I just wondered if a remap would make the car more efficient.

I have thought of changing to skinny tyres, just to see how much consumption improves.

I read on here somewhere that in Holland I think they could change the ratio on the gearbox quite cheaply, and together with a remap, that could be a good way forward to improve MPG, as I find the standard gearing gives a very high RPM in 5th at 70mph, I would much prefer it to be around 1500rpm.

yes, pick a set of cogs. 0.64 is very doable. There's threads on that, too, and the price isn't very high either. You won't get it down to 1500rpm, though, without going six-speed IMO.

That's this thread: http://www.a2-freun.de/forum/showthread.php?t=23805 - and I'll translate one of the last posts:

"31/48 for 0,645. Under 45mph now no longer possible in fifth. 1400U = ca. 50mph, and this is find. Mine is unchipped. At 105 (tacho, ca. 60mph), he now has exactly 2k on the tachometer. No real change in "pull", slightly lower consumption to be expected."
The cogs came from Rosenkranz, €160, and the fitting was €122 incl. new oil.

Skinny tyres alone do little. Light wheels *and* eco tyres will make the real, noticeable difference, especially in comparison to the petrol-eating 17s. My difference between 185 winters and 215 summers is a full 0.7l/100, so €1 per 60 miles.

Bret

Thanks Brett for the link and the advice. Do you know if there is a cog that gives lower rpm, or is that it, as I'm sure a chipped car would easily pull a "taller" gear.

Wow what a difference between your winter tyres and summer. I would imagine that if you had eco narrow tyres, as opposed to winter narrow tyres there would be an even bigger difference! maybe 1ltr / 100km? Thats around a 25% improvement.

Regarding the 1.2tdi, You mentioned and undertray. I cant find it on vag cat, or any pics, do you know what it looks like or where / how it fits?

Also, the 1.2tdi says it has different wheel archers (they look the same to me) and that hole in the front have been blanked to improve drag. Again the front looks the same as the standard one to me. Do you know any different?

... there's a 14-page thread (with my settings of 40 posts per page) on the German board.

Easiest thing to do: register, go flip through http://www.a2-freun.de/forum/showthread.php?t=26925 including the piccies, there are part numbers in there too. It's a huge thread, though :(

Let me see if I can find some partnumbers, hold on....

there's a *lot* more where that came from.

re: even higher than 0.645: the guys don't want to lose flexibility and if you go "too far", the gap 4-5 becomes huge. Unless you want to rev the nuts off it in fourth, I'd say something around this is the "right" way. OTOH, what you could do is check where peak power is and then at peak power / torque (i.e. optimal efficiency) make the change to fifth - work the ratios out, as it might be if you lengthened fourth fifth would go nicely.... there are also calcs on this in the thread linked above.

No, I can't do it, I have a petrol. I'd quite like to, because I don't mind dropping a cog or two to overtake and a touch longer fourth would be great for country lanes... but cruise would no longer work. And I use it a *lot*.

Re: consumption:
- Summer average is around 7.0l/100. Winter 6.3 at summer speeds and 5.8 or so at winter speeds (80km/h, summer is 100). 165/65R15 ecos on seriously light alloys would be fantastic, I could probably see 5 if I stuck to the winter limits. 'twas 5.6 at the weekend over 480km.

Here's a link to a2sumo's photo's for the 1.2 mod

http://www.a2oc.net/forum/album.php?albumid=84

And in comparison last year i went to ADI, on the way down had my remap done had to fill up on the way home about 70 ish miles from home, this year got there and back without filling up, plus i went out of my way (extra miles) to meet up with Darren C and still got 63 mpg's

But the remap just sets the 1.4 Tdi up nice if you think it drives well without it wait till you drive it afterwards its like a different car so much easier to drive. Well worth the money

Phil

Thanks for the link and pics.

If A2Sumo is reading, How much difference and what do the parts cost please?

Thanks

hi black pearl the parts come to about £33 that is for the spoiler(black bit)and the alloy exhaust cover.don't bother ordering the plastic fasteners that are supposed to hold the spoiler on as they are useless in my opinion--just use self tappers or as we did and drill and tap the steel part on the sub frame.the exhaust cover is easy to fit and you use the existing nuts.
does it make a difference well yes it does Daren and i fitted them on the same day and instantly gained 4.5mpg and so far mine has increased by 3-5mpg(dual carriageway driving). the only difference in our two cars is that Daren's has the Audi body kit along with a seat diffuser on the front.as our cars are fsi's we had to cut the spoiler about quite a lot--see pics. so i am in the process of making us titanium versions.
all in an easy modification---also remember you will need the front corner spoilers if you intend to fit to anything other than an fsi!!!!
cheers mike

Interesting thread. I must admit i noticed when i fitted Falken tyres to replace the Pirellis the consumption deteriorated by about 5%.... so tyre brand/ compounds do make a difference and what I 'saved' on the cost of cheaper tyres is being spent on more fuel....! The idea of a higher 5th appeals partly to reduce the mechanical 'din' at speed along with less wear and tear and hopefully improve mpg... Anyone in the UK gone down this route? Seeing as you live nearby Black pearl I might be tempted to do this if you find a mechanic who will do the cog swap ( when/if i get a '90')!

well, if Black Pearl comes over for the Icedriving, we can get you a couple of sets of cogs and they can get delivered back to Yorkshire ;)

one more: Fill up the hole in the rear bumper. Go have a look, you'll see it. I haven't done mine yet, I don't know quite why.

These pics also say quite a lot:

ha, that might not be right. I'll correct the link later.EDIT: Corrected
