best performance mod

I won't have time today and I doubt tonight either (I'm playing taxi driver for the family) to check partnumbers and sources.

Bret

@ Humps - you're a legend, thanks! Will definitely take you up on that offer :)
The tunnel cover is on back-order from Germany, so won't be for a little while, but definitely soon. Great!

Dan, you're welcome to borrow my axel stands, trolley jack and the driveway if you pop over to Harrow :) I don't have an angled drill but the angled adapter shouldn't be difficult to source and I have a set of drill bits, torx bits ...etc should be enough to do the job.

@ Brett - thanks in advance, your help is very much welcomed.

@ Adrian - exactly what I want to achieve too, just want to optimise the car. Let's see what Brett can advise on and we'll take it from there.

Apologies for the threadjack.

Replacing the 5th Gear Cog(s)

Having had the misfortune of having my gearbox reconditioned (twice for the same syncro ring) I can tell you that it took 11 hours.

5 hours alone was to remove and replace the gearbox from the A2 and the rest was stripping, checking and refitting.

OK you won't have to remove all the bits from the shafts just to change the 5th gear cogs (you have a matched pair) one on each shaft.

This cost me about £800 fitted.

Thanks, the time sounds excessive and the price:eek:! IF that is the general case ( perhaps some of the A2 techies might have an idea) then it doesn't make economic sense to me.

I don't understand then how the Altona guys can offer the set, fitted, for less than €400.

I will have a butcher's, I'm sure I've seen DIY fitting instructions.

Bret

it ain't DIY, but still:

from here: http://www.a2-freun.de/forum/showpost.php?p=513712&postcount=16

___70 = 1400 Beschleunigen kein Problem
__100 = 2010 Verbrauch um die 4 L
__110 = 2210 Turbolader setzt spürbar ein
__150 = 3020 Verbrauch um die 5,5 - 6 L
__200 = 4030 Verbrauch um die 9,5 L (müssten echte 185-188 sein)

I'm sure we've been through this before somewhere ?!. Anyway, these are the numbers.

and the real instructions, which I'm sure someone like Robin could read and confirm - in the list of things to to, chapter powertrain - 5 - 34 - "gearbox disassembly and reassembly" should be the right one.

Many of these companies organise the parts themselves. If you just want the 0.7 from th 90, then the part numbers are 02A311361AM and 02A311158AF .

I'd personally want to go towards 0.65.

Bret

I want a higher 5th than the '90' otherwise it might be easier to find a '90' gearbox! I can get my German girlfriend to translate anything linked to the German Forum. I therefore take it to go to the recommended 0.65 those are specialist supplied cogs or did VAG use such a gearing with this 'box on other products ( Polo/Ibiza/Fabia etc)?

I remember reading somewhere that the cog swap is done by taking the end plate off the engine/box and sliding the old cog off and the new one back on.

It looked fairly simple, and hence why it doesn't cost the much to have done, by those who know how.

It would have to be something like that for the 2hours or so labour from that German specialist. I really want this to be doable financially as well as practically... Anyone know any UK box specialists?

Maybe need to try some of the Independant VAG specialists such as IVC in Leeds (for thsoe of us in the north!)? Like you Dan it has to be sensible economically however I too seem to recall reading this can be done without major surgery!

Indeed. If the Germans can do it for such little money that implies it's a straightforward enough job mechanically.
We'll see!

A big box arrived today full of under-body aero parts for my A2. ;)

Humps, we should talk about meeting up!

Now, how's that group buy for the gearbox mod coming along...

Hey dan, I'll be interested to see the kit as well. I'm busy this weekend and the weather doesn't look too good. May be next week. Give me a PM any time.
