    The Black Pearl

It has been a long road for a ‘non project’ car. It is a great shame you are having to give up on it. I followed the thread and admired your tenacity and determination to put right all of the historical bodges and neglect the car has seen. Reversing entropy is always going to be a tough job. I...

If you are averse to DIY then call out a Gas Safe engineer who can check the relevant system pressures and check that the pressure relief valve is not stuck!

Another one bites the dust, (pressed wishbone failure)

Do we have any experience of the ride characteristics of this alternative set up? Presumably the bushing is for the Polo. If so then using the Polo/SEAT/Skoda Consoles (VWAG 600 199 293D which fit the A2 but with a different rear bush size and stiffness) would produce a similar result without...

Do you have a ‘Ball Barrow’? The first commercial venture for Mr Dyson back in 1974? I had one back in the day, very good on rough muddy terrain until the ball gets a puncture! https://www.stuff.tv/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2021/08/dyson-ballbarrow.jpg

Do you get a sense of the engine rocking on its mounts? If yes then the ‘dog bone’ mount at the rear of the engine would be the first thing to suspect

It might be worth a try but what are the consequences on the structural strength of the casting if heated in such a way? Many aluminium castings are heat treated to improve both their strength and corrosion resistance. If that has already been done to these casting might it be deleterious to...

Not having removed a console I can only go by what I have read. Yes I believe the console has to be slid out from the sub-frame. (As you point out I believe this negates the possibility of using the location pins) Hence why people say to mark the existing location before removal)

Thinking on this overnight brings a few things to mind. 1) Should the new long bolt have been torqued up with the vehicle on the ground with the suspension compressed and the bush in its neutral position. Torquing it as I have will leave the bush pre-stressed sitting on the ground? 2) Taking...

Not heard of having to undo both sides, certainly if you do then the subframe is completely loose.

Possible but it was cleaned and only washing up liquid used as a lube

Well it worked, the arm pressed in but my word it was still quit an effort. The long bolt torqued to 70Nm + 90deg no problem. Surprisingly when working the arm up and down it looks as thought the hex rotates within the bush. Replaced the disc splash guard using stainless replacement bolts (old...

OK, you are allowed to laugh! Referencing my earlier question over how strong a ratchet strap would need to be, Wednesday late night browsing of eBay and I came across a 10Ton NOS MOD ratchet strap and I made an offer, not really expecting it to be accepted. In the morning I found I had...

Cast Wishbone Replacement - Aftermarket Meyle

Do you know what the dimension was on your new pressed ones (the ones that went in ‘easily’). I am struggling with pressed ones from Triscan, the hex is oversized (only by 0.5mm) compared to the original. 19.5mm cf 19mm

Just done a double check on sizing. The new ones are closer to 19.5mm!. So perhaps a little fettling is required before trying again. From the threads I have read I thought it was the cast ones coming in oversized. Need to check the fabricated ones as well

    Today I.....

I did check when they arrived original and new measured 19mm across the flats, the hex in the bush measured 18mm

The fact that everyone says that as minimum you need to mark around the console location implies that there is room for movement and misalignment when re-installling. How many of the bolt locations have this degree of movement?

    Today I.....

Many people have done as you say and I am sure it is the correct way. My fears is finding more difficult corroded bolts (anti-roll bar, plate nuts etc) and having a bigger job on my hands. Plus purchasing more tools that will never get used again such as the subframe alignment pins. I can...

Thanks for all your recent input and help. It is not so much a project as necessity to get it back on the road, hence I am not documenting it in any meaningful way. I cannot weigh the arms accurately only on a set of bathroom scales (too heavy for the kitchen digital scales) and 3kg is the best...
