1.4 petrol Thermostat part no.

Hi guys,

My temperature gauge is no longer staying on 90 degrees but wanders between 70 and 90 intermittently.
The thermostat was replaced in Feb. last year with one from Euro Carparts to no avail.
I presume a genuine Audi part would be a better bet so I've phoned my local dealer who said he had two temperature ranges available. Can anyone tell me what the correct range and part number should be for a year 2000 engine please?

Thanks, Mike

The wandering temperature gauge is normally a sign of a faulty temperature sender rather than the thermostat.

I apologize for (slightly) breaking into this discussion, but I would also like to join this question, even if this is not the solution to the OP's problem.
I will soon be changing the thermostat (due to doing some other work, as it will then be easy), and I am also confounded by those two ranges – could not find anywhere what the correct range is. The only clue may be that each of those ranges has a different cover, so it is possible to determine the current range... but that assumes that the person changing the thermostat last time used the right range.

A similar thermostat question was covered recently with links to pics of the different types - http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthrea...e-tale-of-two-thermostats&p=268478#post268478

Although relating to the BBY engine it's likely the two vastly different thermostat designs apply to the AUA engine. If Audi can't tell from the VIN which type was used during engine build then to be on the safe side you'd need to do check what's fitted before buying.

When I went to buy a thermostat last year I was also offered 2 temp ranges in the SAME style of state, I opted to go for the highest range on the grounds that I would like a higher engine temperature and the little 3 pot oil burner produces little enough heat as it is, so last thing you want is the state to open to soon and release the heat into the radiator.
Can as run at 90 deg on gauge and via VCDS since changing the thermostat (assuming reasonable ambient temperature / after a few miles of running
