1.4 Tdi Struggling to start..

It's curious that ebay and Autodoc list it as a brake vacuum pump, but it's the right part number and has the three connectors. The Bosch one is listed the same, so I guess it's just the way it is.

Yes I saw the three pipes which I would not expect on the 1.9/2.0 engine vacuum pumps

Not been around recently; £300 is a lot of money and wondered how you arrived at the pump being the problem. I've read the thread from start to finish and the test you did with the diesel feed direct into the pump so eliminating the filter and tank is a test I would have done. You still have two A2 Tdi, one runs fine?
I would swap the known good pump on and repeat the test. If you get the same result it is not the pump and you have saved £300.

Hi,
@depronman, a polite question.
Why would we not expect to see three pipes on a 1.9/2.0 tdi tandem pump?

My understanding of the 1.9/2.0 pd engine setup is that there is a in tank mounted fuel pump to proved fuel to the injectors
Therefore the pump on the end of the cylinder head is a vacuum pump for the brakes and not a tandem pump
Tandem pump as fitted to the 1.4pd engines is a fuel pump and a vacuum pump hence the name tandem

Like I said earlier. May be wrong and the 1.9/2.0 engines may have had a in tank pump and a tandem pump but this was not my understanding

Indeed a meme we on here brought me a pump that he had bought for the 1.4pd engine (ATL) which was mis sold to him as it was for a 1.9pd and from memory it only had the vacuum pipe on it

This is why I think the pump in the earlier picture may actually fit the 1.4pd because it as 3 pipes. Assumed to be fuel in, excess fuel return to tank and vacuum to brakes BUT what spooked me was the 1.9/2.0

Hi @depronman,
Thank you for the reply. There are different-shaped tandem pumps, but as @BigBang put it, they are all the same.
I would refine that to say there is usually a fuel side to the pump with the
  • fuel inbound line connector
  • fuel return line connector
And both of these measure about 8mm outside diameter.

On the other side of the pump, usually of a larger diameter, is the vacuum pump connector on the 1.9/2.0 tdi pd pumps.
I hope this is of some use.
Kind regards,
@rotifer

Edit.
Example listing for a 1.9 tdi tandem pump

Yes it has crossed my mind to do that, but I'm also reluctant to mess with my good car. I think I'll take off the pump on the grey one and see what kind of job it is, see what the pump looks like and take it from there. Thanks :)

Hi @DaveySprocket ,
Hope you had a good holiday and have renewed vigour.
For £36 I'm tempted to give this a go.

That's the different shape pump I was referring to in my post speaking with @depronman .

Dont buy one of those

Have you sorted this out? This happened to went through all the same things. It was in the end the fuel injectors, I put new seals on each oh the 3 injectors at £8 per injector, and it started and did every time just like a new car..
I'm still thinking tandem pump on mine, but with the mileage it's done, it might be worth doing the injectors and harness as well, while I am fiddling on.. Cheers :)

Well after reading that it was an easy job, I suddenly had the inspiration to remove the tandem pump this afternoon.

It only took half an hour, an the hardest bit was removing the back hose, those things cling on for dear life!

I couldn't see any clear signs of gasket failure.

i did the same, but not Tandam pump and the wiring harness when broken causes it to mis run, not, not start.

I should be able to get this other tandem pump fitted sometime soon, it had a pressure gauge fitted to it, which snapped off and has been bodged, but it's supposed to be okay. I guess I can always change that little cover part over if needs be.

Well I fitted the spare Tandem pump the other day with a new gasket, and guess what, it made no difference whatsoever doh!

So back to square one, what am I doing wrong?

So I put a bit of clear pipe on the inlet to the pump and checked for air, and there was loads..
IMG_20240330_153902_HDR.jpg
So where is it coming from, and how am I going to find the leak?

First I took the feed pipe from the sender and ran another pipe from it into a fuel can, still got air. The problem is it is very hard to be sure that it is not the various connections that you have to make that are actually introducing the air. 🤔

Anyway, next up I took out the filter and managed to connect a pipe up into the feed to the pump and into a fual can.
IMG_20240331_120435_HDR.jpgIMG_20240331_120514_HDR.jpg
This time no air coming through, yay some kind of progress.

So I figured it must be either the filter cap or bleed screw, so I had a look at them. I have the depronman ally bleed fitting and all new O rings, so It's hard to know what could be wrong. I poked a bit of O ring up the bleed hole to plug it just in case.

Back together I checked again, and still air.. Aaaarrgghh

So is the problem maybe between the filter and the tank? I think next I will try to get a pipe onto the feed to the filter and connect it to a fuel tank and see if that helps..

You are in the same situation as me, following this with interest.
I've managed to get the car on some high ramps and I'm going to check the pipes the enter and leave the cooler under the car
