Hi there.. my 04 plate 1.4 tdi with 205,000 miles has a rotten rear beam, not sure if that’s the correct term for it… anyway it has holes in the thin steel near the rear brake drum, can this be repaired with welding??
If not, any ideas or help where I could get a replacement? The only ones I can see for sale are all abroad and the images don’t look very clear… not keen paying loads for shipping if it’s not a great replacement.. I would rather drive and collect one in the uk that I can see is solid.. any help would be fantastic…we’ve had the car for 15 years and just can’t let it go…. Thanks in advance Gary

Get in touch with WOM @chumsofmanutd

From the picture I am Not sure that could be welded, however of our well known dismantlers will be along presently with some advice etc. It’s not a big job to change a rear beam. Replacement beam, New bushes, bearings, brake pipes and flex pipes good for another 200k
Thankyou for a swift reply, I had a feeling it is too far gone for any repairs… I’m hoping something will turn up at a reasonable price.. 👍

Both @Clackers and I both break A2’s continuously. I have a disc brake axle on my current breaker which is reserved to another member but it is only a matter of time before I or Andy have another one available.

Thank you so much, If you could keep me in mind that would be great… 👍

They have refurbished and replaced the beam axle on both of my A2's.
But I think that they would require an axle that they would be able to refurbished and I think that yours is passed that stage

I’ll take three of those 🤣
I honestly do not think 1200EUR is expensive compared to scrapping and buying a new car.

In generally you can fix your old car for 5000-10000EUR every year and that will still be cheaper than being the owner of a new car. But spending that much money every year is impossible because cars do not break down that much.

Thanks for info, I’ll send them a message and see what they suggest, cheers Gary 👍

You may want to replace rear suspension, handbrake cables, brake lines, splash shields/ stone guards and rear discs, pads, calipers? Cost do add up
And what are your front lower arms like?

Hi terry.. yes it’s becoming reality that it’s not a cheap fix, but it’s very rarely failed us in all its life.. so feel committed to keep it working.. my fault really for not maintaining that beam.. I’ll check the front parts too when I manage to buy a decent rear replacement.. thanks again for your advice, this forum is a great place!, I feel so lucky to have people out there that care and can be bothered to take a bit of time and help others out.. especially non mechanical types like me .. 👍 it’s like an A2 safety net!
