1.6 FSI coolant expansion tank

Hi,

My original tank was leaking, so I've bought a new one off ebay, supposedly OEM. However, new tank is quite smaller than old one, so there's not enough place for coolant cold/hot volume changes - in the morning car signals not enough coolant, but when warmed up coolant is at appropriate level.
I would like to buy original size tank, any idea where to get one ?

Thank you,
Mario

Good Evening Mario,

Your new tank might well be OEM but just not for your A2, many VAG models have very similar tanks just differing slightly in dimensions and features such as fixings. When buying a part it essential to use the part number to guarantee compatibility, the part number for the FSI tank is 8Z0121407C, note the 'C' at the end it is important, any other letter and it will similar but different in some way.

If you wish to buy new, as mentioned above, available from Audi Tradition at a reasonable price.

This will be exactly like your old tank.

I replaced the coolant tank on my tdi with the exact same one as shown in your pic. Was a genuine Audi part but is smaller than the original. I've been using it for 6months however with no issues .

Good Evening,

Out of interest what is the part number of your new smaller tank?

A versus C expansion tank parts explained at 7zap :

9AA = Manually controlled heating system
9AK = Climatronic with impact pressure control free of cfc
8Z6 = Hot country

Andy , part number is 8Z0121407A
Good Afternoon,

Thank for this.

I must admit never having seen a reference during my long history on here to a smaller tank I assumed all A2 models have the same coolant tank, apparently not so.

On a general level I can well appreciate with the lower heat output generated by the diesel engine a smaller tank will suffice, not the case with Mario's FSI running at 110℃, a different kettle of fish, and my original advice to Mario still stands.

Thanks to Robins's (@Robin_Cox ) post I studied the pages of 7zap and not wishing to alarm I concluded the 1.4TDI should have the larger tank and only the 1.4 petrol and ANY can have the smaller tank if no climate and manual controls instead, maybe I got it wrong.

Thanks for the information . Really interesting as I too thought they all had the same size of tanks . I ordered one from Autodoc previously and fitment was completely wrong despite being listed as suitable. I'll keep the smaller one that I have and see how it goes . So far car has ran fine and climate control works with no issues . In fact since changing the tank and the temp sensor the car heats up far quicker , holds temperature better (previously used to cool down very quickly once engine was switched off ) and economy has improved . Even in the 30c heat we recently had , temperature gauge never moved above 90c and the engine fan didn't need to kick in either . So far no downsides to it 🤞

I've found the smaller tank on X and Y plate 1.4 petrols and TDI's ive had in for breaking. Seemed to change with the many updates that came in late 2001.

Was the "different kettle of fish" in conjunction with "FSI running at 110C" an intentional pun?
Clever either way!
Mac.
