15 years too late my first a2, cheap and i need advice

Andrew,
Thank you so much for the detailed info, I will be checking this out over the weekend. Can I assume that if I provide an earth (via a jump lead to battery -Ve) to the radio aerial amplifier located on the side of the tail gate and then turn on the heated rear window, if the reception remains good then I have an earth problem, but if the reception goes bad then is it likely to be the aerial amplifier itself ?

Hi,

if you provide the amplifier with a good earth directly onto its earth tag and when turning on the heater it still works, the tailgate earth is the problem. Exactly where abouts the problem is would need further investigation but at least you would know what course of action to follow.

The boot trim is a pain to remove as the clips are very strongly attached to the tailgate and the plastic holding them is less strong! Also, the edge of the trim as it touches the metal is very thin so it cannot be prised up there. The way I have removed it in the past is to pull one corner away by hand enough to get a tool in the gap and to the closest clip. Then prise between the clip and the tailgate. Once one clip has been removed it gets easier.

I have photographed and indicated the positions of the fixing clips on the reverse side. Note the two clip positions either end of the grab handle to show the orientation. As the back is shown, left and right will be refersed if you face the interor trim head on. This should show you where to aim when prising off the clips. The idea is to get between the end of the plastic post where the clip is located and the tailgate metal. The danger is that if you prise the trim itself, the post breaks or become removed from the trim (hot glue is good for fixing that).

The trim around the sides of the window glass are also held on with the same clips, and just as strongly. You can see the clips from one of the side pieces here:

There are also 3 clips on the top trim, one in the centre and two near each end.

As the trims overlap each other, the removal sequence is the bottom large trim first, the top window trim next and then the two side trims last. Reassembly is the reverse.

regards

Andrew
