3rd gear crunch

Hmm - it used to be that my 3rd gear was a bit slow and crunchy only when the car was very cold - ie. depths of (British) winter, but now with the warmth of spring, it's still doing it - and it doesn't take much to provoke the crunch.
I fear I may be losing the synchro on 3rd gear - at least I hope it's that and nothing worse.

Any ideas as to costs to fix? I presume that while that is done it would make sense then to change the clutch at the same time as I assume they'd have the gearbox out? The car has done just shy of 120k miles and the last 40k of that on a remap. All other forward gears are fine although reverse is sometimes a bit difficult to engage too.

Anyone got any recommendations for a good transmission garage for Audis in SW London?

Hi Dan,

Can't help on costs or work involved etc.........but Stealth are G/Box specialists, so it would be worth chatting to Vince to see what he recommends

Cheers

Jeff

Hi dan i would try new oil and re-set of the gear cables, you never know. Syncros need good oil to work properly,it is a job thats easilly forgoten about and at the 140k mile point if it has never been changed will be far from its best.
fingers crossed mike

Hi Mike -good thinking about the box oil, although it was changed when I did the 5th gear mod last year so it should be ok.
Hi Jeff - good point about Stealth, although I was hoping for something nearer I'll certainly bear them in mind!

recently with the same problem, I changed the third gear synchromesh

So Mike,

Did you DIY or have it done for you?
Did the g/box need removing or can the work be done in situ?
What was the labour cost if you had the work carried out by someone else, and if it was done by someone other than you, did you use a dealer or 3rd party?

Thanks

Jeff

Click "reply". You will get the box where you can type your reply. At the top of that box, you will see some buttons where can make the text bold, underlined, etc. There is a button which allows you to "insert image". Click this button, and another little box will open where you can select which photos on your computer you wish to upload.

Thank you!

Tom
