Below current figures between the two I used at time of buying my car (Tdi 75 and 1,4 petrol

From Audi.co.uk:
TDI 75: Combined everage: 64.0 MPG
Petrol 1,4 Combined average: 46.3 MPG
Price of diesel and petrol taken as 78p/litre

Thus over 60000 miles:
TDI
60000/64=937.5 gallons
937.5*4.5=4218 litres
4218*0.78p= £3290.62

Petrol
60000/46.3=1295.9 gallons
1295.9*4.5=5831.5 litres
5831.5*0.78p= £4548.60

Thus a saving of £1257.98

Over 15000 miles:
TDi
15000/64=234.37 gallons
234.37*4.5=1054 litres
1054*0.78p= £822

Petrol
15000/46.3=323.97 gallons
323.97*4.5=1457.18 litres
1457.18*0.78p= £1137.15

Thus a saving of £315.15

FACTS speak for themselves I'm afraid: You need to do nearly 60000 miles to break even for the £1000 you paid extra.

except that you should use road test figures not Audi UK mpg propoganda!

try Audi Driver or Autocar mags for more realistic figures

Also consider 2nd hand values and depreciation of diesel models vrs petrol I think the figures will be closer to reality. If you buy a 2nd hand (1 year old) TDI vrs a 1.6 FSI the numbers work for 15000 miles

My point had NOTHING to do with buying 2nd hand or depreciation. It has no relevance. The argument is about people buying new. Nor did it with a 1,6 Fsi.

Finally "real world" road test fuel used makes no difference either. The PROPORTION of fuel the diesel uses for every litre a petrol uses is the same wether you say the average MPG of the Tdi is 64, 55 or 20. The petrol will always be about 0.7 to the diesel.

Sorry if my arguements don't come over as accurate or friendly - they are supposed to!

Have a look at What Car - they base everything on new prices and cost of running and depreciation over 3 years driving just 10000 miles per year. The results are surprisingly accurate and seeing as the average (according to the RAC) motorist in the UK spends over £5000 per year on their cars in running costs, a huge proportion of this is Depreciation - of course it is relevant to how much money you loose over the period of the 1st, 2nd and nth years of ownership - the point is , and I believe we agree on this, that high mileage drivers will win out using a diesel car - it's just the figures like 60000 miles to regain the £1000 initial outlay i disagree with.

Take for example the test in Diesel car mag jan 2003 comparing the Audi A4 Avant 1.9 TDi to the 2.0 FSI. The same spec. petrol starts out £400 cheaper but running the 2 side by side over 3 years and 45,000 miles (more realistic 15k miles per year) allowing for insurance, fuel (with higher diesel purchase price) used, depreciation (estimates from CAP), road tax and maintenance the diesel costs 42.1 p per mile to the FSI's 46.1 p per mile - not a huge saving but still almost £1800 cheaper than the petrol or 600 per year / £50 per month - so in 8 months or 10000 miles the £400 initial difference is cleared.
