A good drive

Peter ,my son , went for a drive in the new Micra yesterday to John o'Groats, 1497 miles, 44.6 mpg, 27 hours. Surely he's mad.
I blame it on the parents.
"It's something I always wanted to do" he said.
I have always wanted to drive the source of the Rhine to the sea, or until it got boring. No time limit, if I am having a good time stay for a while, if not move on.The original ambition was to do it by motor bike, 30 years on and now it's do it by car. Do you think it would be as enjoyable today as it would have been 30 years ago? Anyone done it?

Sounds very mad! hehehe... did he sleep somewhere there? Or straight back to Lands End just for the heck of it?

Johann, he said he watched the sunset at John O'Groats then came home, he stopped when he felt tired and slept for short periods. Thats how I used to do my marathon drives to Spain etc. 20 minutes or so sleep and I was alert again, but I felt tired the next day. It was all as you say, for the heck of it.

Hi this is Peter about my little adventure!
I left Essex at 3:30am and headed towards Glasgow via the M6. I reached Glasgow at about 11am then went on to Loch Lomond where I stopped for 15 minutes as I thought it looked pretty nice which it was! Then left and travelled along the A82 through the highlands and stopped at the Glencoe visitors centre at about 2:30pm. Amazing views. Back in the car and then stopped at the Commando Memorial by Ben Nevis, back in the car past Loch Ness, waved to the monster and went through Inverness and thought should I really go all the way up to John O Groats as I have already been driving virtually non stop for over 13 hours and I have to drive back home yet! As I am quite stupid I thought yes I will carry on! What a drive! It took about 2.5 hours but the coastal drive was well worth it. The scenery was like off the t.v, the odd house dotted about, derelict buildings and even an old man driving 30mph in an old Morris Minor, brilliant! I eventually made J.O.G at about 7:15pm not long before it started to get dark, watched the sea for about 20 min and thought it's time to go home now! So off I went down to Inverness carried on along the A9 to Edinburgh where I somehow ended up in the city centre at the perfect time of 2:30am just when all the clubs are turning out. I played dodge the drunk for a while not knowing where I was going until I eventually ended up on the A70 to Lanark, not the road I wanted but it took me out of Edinburgh so it was good enough for me.I found the M74 where after a while I felt a little tired so I stopped at a service station to rest. An hour later after waking up, I carried on my little adventure and headed home the way I came. I arrived home at 10:30am after listening to hours of Marilyn Manson and Gary Numan on my cd player. Heaven!
My new shape Micra performed perfectly, it was really comfortable for the whole 1497 miles and 31 hours, so don't ever take the mickey out of one, their great little cars ;).
I'm glad I did this drive now, it was good fun even though I was on my own, a bit mad/stupid, and if I do it again I will have to take a camera as I only decided to do it when my alarm went off in the morning!
Can't wait to see Scotland again, but spend more time next time, it's an amazing place!
Peter

I've only been to Edinburgh via plane, taxi to city centre and back again, but you can't beat being in the hub of the city, yet seeing mountains in the distance, with low cloud hanging over them. Wonderful!.

I had one of the first new shape Micra's as a rental car and loved the eagerness of the thing and the looks... I have always wanted to drive through Scotland but never thought of it as a dat trip have to admit! Thankfully I have a friend in Inverness so could at least stay the night there!

Having lived in Scotland most of my life, Ive been there, done that and got the t-shirt.

The one place I'd really like to visit/live would be London

I know it expensive, there's traffic chaos but i'd still like to visit/live there.

For one reason or another Ive never been before and every one I know who's been says its great and well worth the trip down.

Mal-if you want London, live in the home counties (like the sounds of Rob). That way you can visit by train, but still have lovley countryside. Try south Suffolk/north Essex, or Herts. I was brought up in north London and whilst it was ok then, it isn't that nice now.

Also try Sussex, Surrey and Kent... beautiful countryside and still 30 minutes to central London... my office is in Gatwick West Sussex so I do a lot of these country roads around here to test the A2s suspension! hehehe... great roads, great countryside... and so close to London!

Mal , they are right you know. Live outside London , and if London has so much appeal, live on a fast train route in. I can get there in half an hour . I was born in Kings Cross and raised in North London, I often have to go in to the centre for meetings, I'm glad to get home. Lets face it, the beer is so much more expensive.

I just thought, I started this thread to see if anyone had a car journey in mind that they would like to do, but havent got round to it yet, or can tell us of a fabulous drive they have enjoyed. How about around Rhode Island, thats nice, or Chicago, that's awful, Essex to Aigua Blava in Spain, that is a good trip, particularly after Lyon. Going alongside the Rhone at first light is truly memorable. Mal, Romford to central London is a severe pain in the butt.

I did a car journey from Seattle down to Portland on the Coast with nice weather, it was really nice.... too bad the rental car was not too nice (Nissan Maxima), An A2 would have been better..:)

Bye, Frido.

Holly - thanks for the tips

If your into stunning scenery then you cant beat going from Dunnoon to Tinabruich on the west coast of Scotland. Once you get the car to the top of the hill/mouintain you can see for at least 10 miles most directions. Done it a few times, the only thing you have to watch out for is the blind bends (there's plenty of them) and the sheep wandering out onto the road.

Alternatly you could take the fife coastal route up the east coast to St Andrews.

Sounds good to me. Madeleine wants to "do" Scotland, maybe next year. We went to Scotland once, it was closed. Seriously though it was Newcastleton, there wasn't a soul to be seen, the police station was open but nobody was in, I wandered all over shouting "shop", "murder", anything, but there was no one in, weird or what. In answer to the obvious question we went to see a friend who had moved there. I have worked in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and spent some time in Edinburgh whilst in the Navy, I was also involved in the Highlands & Islands scheme professionally. I also played in a pipe band, really. I really do want to see Scotland, it can often be a problem arranging accommodation when you have a dog, but we will sort that out, and I will certainly do the Dunnoon to Tinabruich drive, it sounds great.

If your looking a for a hotel in Glasgow city center, then you should try the millenium hotel which overlooks George Square, I think its 4 star and they allow dogs, they'll even bring the dog some breakfast in the morning.

I know all this from previous experience

On a tray?
Thanks Mal I'll bear that in mind.
The last time I stayed in the centre was the Holiday Inn and the Hilton. Lots of very friendly ladies lining the street at night.
I did look on e-bay for a set of pipes, or maybe only a chanter, that went down like a **rt in church with 'er indoors.
