A2 1.2 TDI - Intermittent clutch not disengaging.

Erling,

I've just noticed the three litres of hydraulic oil! Three litres? I don't want to cast aspersions on your local Audi workshop (not much!) but that must be enough to fill the entire system about 15 times! They must have had a party!

VAG 400% price hike!

Hi RAB,

Audi Warranty claim rip-off by mechanic on oil...............?

Re accumulator, I spoke with your man @ Caffyns....who clearly remembers you.

December 2009 price for 6N0 142 433 - £21.52 each, as per the two he sold you.

March 2010 price for 6N0 142 433 - £84.14 each, as per the one he didn't sell me.

He attributes astronomical price hike to 'out of production' vehicle, coupled with small batch production costs demanded by VAG supply chain

I'll search eBay for a while just in case there's another source at a more reasonable price.

Best regards,

Erling.

PS: I've really appreciated my Winter tyre set this year, but look forward to April and return of exciting low rolling resistance Bridgestones (plus circa 10% improved fuel economy).

Update - Gearbox out and parts on backorder

Stafford Audi tackled loss of Tiptronic hydraulic pressure and dragging clutch on down changes during planned variable service visit a month ago....and still have the car. Its a long saga involving Audi UK Tech advice team (haven't really got a clue), Audi extended warranty admin and garage trying to do the right thing by me.

I now have rental car c/o Audi extended warranty (MB A Class auto) and Stafford Audi still have my car's gearbox/tiptronic change system and clutch cover/plate on a workshop bench waiting back order parts - replacement clutch actuator, electric hydraulic pump assy and hydraulic accumulator. In effect, Audi have now opted to replace every hydraulic system part of the clutch and gearchange operating system.

Following on from Cardiff Audi's gear change actuator replacement (another £1,300 warranty claim, Stafford Audi warranty bill now exceeds £1,600 - with more to come.

Yet again, really good return on Audi extended warranty £600 plus annual premium!

Good news....clutch plate and cover have no visible wear - consistent with my long motorway commute and not bad for over 120,000 miles.

Don't know when car will be finished.........maybe there's a conspiracy to keep it until warranty expires in August!

Ciao,

Erling

I think you've won the jackpot!

The famous Herr Otto of Aachen apparently does not know of a single 1.2Tdi that has ever worn it's clutch out! Can't ride the clutch.

Very likely! Hope you notice the difference in August. Even if you don't you have a new car. I'm green!!

Erling,

I've just noticed from www.Lupo3LClub.de that due to many complaints, the price of the accumulator has been reduced from the 1st July. I'm not sure what to though!

Have you got your 'new' A2 back yet?

RAB

To €37!!!!! That's less than half what is was. Must be a first!

Free accumulators

Hi RAB,

So VAG have at least listened to Lupo owners!

Car back with me for 3 weeks and circa 2000 miles - all seems well, and gear selection now sounds far more positive. Can now always get 5, sometimes 6, changes before electric pump runs using 'RAB system health check'.

Thanks for the VW 'tiptronic' box school course material; gearbox technician at Stafford appreciated using it.

Stafford Audi also fitted under warranty complete new gearchange assembly (replacing new unit fitted earlier in year by Cardiff Audi under warranty), new clutch hydraulic actuator assembly, new HydraulicPump assembly (complete with new accumulator) and host of other misc parts referred to earlier in this thread.

I found 3 x 1 litre unopened bottles of hydraulic oil in boot, with two new boxed accumulators when I collected the car - no charge to me.

I've since confirmed that Audi Warranty don't want any of the displaced parts, so like you I'll collect the lot to store in my garage as Insurance.

Audi Warranty have declined to renew my extended warranty, even on a restricted basis as the car has now exceeded 100,000 miles. Just as well this was all sorted within the warranty cover period!

It's really good to back to normal A2 1.2 TDI 90 mpg plus comfortable economy on my daily and week end commute - I missed the free wheeling.

I suspect it was a mess up! I cannot imagine VAG selling them at a loss, errr.. although they have done that with A2's and 3L's in the past!

Came from the German site, not me!

Jackpot time is over! Back to free wheeling in the A2, not with Audi! One new gear actuator in the car and another in the garage! Some people have all the luck.

RAB

So, two gear actuators at about £1100 each, one clutch actuator (about £225), one hydraulic unit (about £700) and maybe ten (probably more) hours of labour (half of those scratching heads). Minimum of about £4,300 when all that was most probably required was a new accumulator. Cost? About £31 and two minutes to replace. No wonder 1.2's have a poor reputation, which, in my experience, is entirely undeserved!

Acc etc

Have ordered new Accumulator from Audi Notts - around £35.

Erling - did you have to give back old hyd changer/pump etc? If not do you have any spares? Mine's leaking again.

Lukas,

Where did you get your replacement gasket from when you repaired the seal last time?

RAB

Bought seal from chap who started a thread about this issue on German A2 forum some years back.

Just fitted new accumulator - noticed the oriffice is larger than my old one which was threaded (M5?). Topped up Hyd fluid as well.

Result: slightly higher pitched pumping noise then 3 at best 4 changes before pump starts again - so no better than before.

At least it wasn't over £35 !

You could try Hylomar next time with the gasket, and possibly use the same gasket if undamaged.

My A2 only achieves 3-4 changes with a new accumulator. Both Lupo's manage six!

RAB

Acc etc for Lukas

Hi Lukas,

Apologies for not replying earlier - I've been distracted by many things and haven't been on line with A2OC since last August.
Just seen your post and I do have spare gearchange assy - but its a virtually brand new one, so wouldn't have wanted to strip it for seals. Fortunately the accumulator change seems to have got you running again and RAB's later post may well clear leak issue up with VW's seal kit?

Hope all now running well.

Ciao,

Erling
