A2 1.6 FSI 2002 teering hydraulics

Hi. When I reverse in the morning there is a slight grinding/whirring noise under the car. It also occurs as I stop on the incline to go out of the garage. My Audi dealer says it is probably the steering electro-hydraulics getting a little old. It will cost through labour, not parts. For now he says not to worry, but I have noticed this week the noise is slightly louder, but only first thing in the morning. Can anyone advise please? Does it need doing? ( I live in Spain so specialised car vocabulary in Spanish is not my forte, although the garage has been really good) Thanks, Ivor.

Is the noise when you move the steering wheel?
Grinding noises are normally transmission or brake related...you sure its not the brake discs?

I agree with chb.
The electric steering pump is only activated when the steering wheel is turned. If you reverse in a straight line it won't be the power steering which is making the noise.

Cheers Spike
