A2 Converted To Lpg?

Out of interest, I was wondering if it was possible (economically/feasibly/physically). Has anyone has actually done a LPG conversion?

I discovered today that some of the cars have the jack, etc in the drivers floor, but their boot had an amp and sub in it. I wonder what the size of the smallest LPG tank would be, and if it would fit the A2.

Any info anyone?

A friend has just enquired re this for his jeep, the kit is estimated at about £2000. He has worked out he wouldnt save that much in the long run re mpg.
But in could be different for the A2.

Well, would converting the Petrol A2 to LPG, make it cheaper to run than the Diesel A2? I think it could well be the case.
Surely LPG kits for smaller cars like our A2's must be cheaper?!

Would imagine the kit would be cheaper, but isnt LPG 10% less econmic than petrol, could be wrong.....but you would save on filling it up, think its about 55p locally

I wasn't aware that LPG was less economical.... not sure about that one, wouldn't road tax be cheaper? and going into City of London?

I think LPG conversions are best suited to "gas guzzlers". I'm sure it would take years if not decades to recover the cost of the conversin in fuel saving for an A2. Even the increased economy of diesel over petrol is being diminished because diesel now costs so much more than petrol. It was not that long ago that diesel was the cheapest.

register for the pics, sorry.

A2-D2 has a 60l tank (with some minor changes to the bottom of the car, the right hand side as you look from the rear has been extended slightly), I'm not sure about Seb.

Ah yes, the FSi is not possible, but the normal petrol one is, the costs involved were around €2500, including TÜV.

My son has a LPG Astra (he bought it already converted at a good price I recall)

He normally gets 31 mpg on LPG - he commutes from Coventry to near Spaggetti Junction in the rush hour. He thinks the handbook says 36 mpg for petrol and 30 for LPG. He is currently paying 46p / litre incl tax (Countrywide). If he is correct, that's 16% less distance but 60% less cost.

http://www.petrolprices.com for Coventry is showing current average price of

Unleaded 116.8p
Diesel 129.7p
LRP 121.7p
Super 124.6p
LPG 55.9p

Either he has a good deal or prices have shot up recently. Even so, half the price for 16% less efficiency but a diesel A2 is almost as good (A2 TDi: 2.1p/m vs Astra LPG: 1.8p/m) and that's before the capital cost.

He also tells me that the previously quiet farmyard filling station is getting more and more
busy (sometimes a queue at 07:30) as the petrol price keeps rising. I guess that's because LPG conversion cars usually still retain their normal fuel tank, with the LPG tank replacing the spare wheel. So I guess that if the price difference is marginal it is not worth a detour and the owner sticks to petrol. I recall the car must be started with petrol.

There's an outfit near his work that's advertising LPG conversions from £1200 for a 4-cyl.

older systems nead petrol to start the newer ones dont, i was told it would cost around £1200 to convert petrol a2 and £1800 to convert diesel.

This is an extract from the link to an LPG conversion company I posted earlier

''Can all vehicles be converted to LPG?
Most petrol engines can be converted to run on LPG. Diesel cars cannot yet be suitably converted. Contact us to find out about converting your car.''

I stand corrected but thought you needed spark plugs to ignite the gas mixture

Cheers Spike

Yes you do need a spark plug to ignite the mixture.

They explain a way of doing the conversion but then at the bottom of the page say the conversions not possible yet.

A guy i know works in a gas conversion place and said they can now carry out diesel conversions.

Bret, can you expand/explain your comment about the FSI not being possible/suitable for LPG conversion? I have a 1.4 petrol A2 that had been converted to LPG and also I've got an FSI and wondered if that could be done - clearly not based on your comment - but I would like to know more about why this is the case.
