A2 Headlight condensation

Hi.

There is a bit of misting around the outer sides of the lights, I only realy notice it if its been raining, it doesn't seem to be there at any other time.

I have to agree that the light on mine were dull/dim when I first had it, I thought the easy option was to change the bulbs to phillips 50% brighter ones, this however was not proving easy, after removing the bonnet and finding the securing clips I still could not remove the old ones, I contacted the local Audi center who advised me the onle way to change the bulbs was to REMOVE the whole light unit, this is a lot simpler than it sounds, there are 2 star screws on the fitting if you remove these and pull the unit forward it pops out (you have to be firm), this does not effect the light levels as the units have 2 locating lugs so when you refit the unit it sits in the same position as before.

In addition to this I raised the levels to give a greater light distance, its far far better know.

Hope this helps anyone thinking of changing the bulbs..

We had one of our headlights replaced by the dealer because of this.
Audi here in the Netherlands guarantees the what they call the A selection *(they call it almost new) for a year.
To be honest so far they have fixed everything under that guarantee we own the car now for about 9 months and since the replacement of the headlight unit no problems anymore.

Maybe it is a sugestion to print out these pages before you go to the garage and show them to them.
Tell them you will publish it on the internet with the name of their garage a little bit of fear might creep up on them and they probaly will fix it.

I think the condensation problem is related to how well the light unit is sealed, I think it should be airtight to prevent ingress of moist air. The new rubber cap/seal is probably designed for this very purpose. My Golf headlights were condensation-free for many years until I disturbed the rubber seal to replace the bulbs.

Is our A2 unique? We have had it four months and even in the cold, damp weather we have not got condensation in the lights - yet! It is a 2002 car and I would not know if we have the new cao or not.
