When i bought my A2 2nd hand it had an Audi 3 button Flip Key and a plastic key only. (The previous owner is looking for the other flip key).

If i happen to loose the flip key what will the plastic key do? As far as i can see i can open the doors with the plastic one even though the car was locked with the transponder button. However i can't get the plastic key to turn on the ignition - this may be because i need to insert more force to do it but currently don't want to risk breaking the plastic in the lock!

2 more questions:
What's the point of the middle 'boot' button on the flip key - mine doesn't open the boot.

Where can i buy a new 3 button flip key if i need one (cheaply!).

Thanks
G Evans

hmmm I have never tried to start mine form the plastic one (I always keep it in my wallet)... will have to try now...

and the central one needs to be pressed for 2 seconds or longer to open the boot...

What is this plastic key business,, my car came with two complete key/fob units but no plastic key,, am I missing something here

I thought the plastic key was a valet/service key-you could open and start the car but not gain access to the locked glove box.....but if I remember you can't lock the glove box?.

You get three keys when you buy an Audi, 2 fold open proper ones and one totally plastic one.

They changed the number of keys you get, now you only get two keys.

Rob Earl...

I can't get to the forum topic you mention, can you repost the relevant info?

Thanks.

As to the plastic key, yes it has got a tag with it.

Nix.
You get two elctronic chaps and a plastic emegency key.
the plasticv chap ,has a chip in it so you can get home on it.
Be very careful in operation though!

I've had experience with the plastic jobbie on a Passat. You can unlock and open the driver door and start the engine. I used this regularly over a few weeks. The only problem was if you unlock and open the door and then either open a rear door or open the boot the alarm goes off. To get around this you have to unlock and open the driver door, insert key in ignition and turn so dash lights come on and then if you try to open the boot or any other door you'll be alright. I found the plastic key quite robust but psychologically you're always thinking "what if ....."

what if ?? what is difference between this plastic key and a normal one? The shape and material is different but the rest is the same, just a normal key.
