A2 soon to be mine!

Welcome to A2OC. Good spot too. A car for 14 quid is some bargain. The fishy kind methinks or maybe a typo.

Good luck with the new car. I'm impressed you managed to negotiate a major service at an Audi franchise as part of the deal.

Definitely a little fishy Murdo....as a quick search of the number plate in the pictures this morning on DVLA reveals that the cars tax is not yet due, yet the advert states no tax.

The only thing that concerns me is it's listed as spares or repairs because of a wheel bearing and other things ?! yet the seller says later In the add it's in perfect running order.

Gutted!

The A2 I was due to purchase had been with Hadwins Audi in Grange-over-Sands for 3 weeks. It was originally only going in for a final service before I purchased it, but they discovered a misfire which the dealer instructed them to repair. A £1400(!) bill later, Audi has replaced the body control valve(?) and I think he's regretting that decision - he collected it from Audi yesterday and the misfire still wasn't sorted. The dealer contacted me an hour ago to fill me in on everything thats happened, and has left me with two options:-

1) Choose another car from his stock with an additional discount due to me waiting so long already.
2) Refund my deposit in full and look elsewhere.

He also mentioned that the service manager at Hadwins Audi was due to call him on Monday morning and discuss why the issue still isn't fixed. He is understandably pi**ed off with forking out such a large amount on Audi's recommendation and the problem still isn't sorted. He said he would call me on Monday after speaking to the service manager.

Thing is, I do now have my heart set on owning an A2, which is probably why i've been more patient than I otherwise would have been. My time is running out though, due to us moving recently my wife and I are about to travel in different directions to work once she finishes her maternity leave at the end of the month. I HAVE to have a car sorted by then - i've got this horrible feeling i'll be forced into buying some generic soulless piece of cr*p.

I know i'm new to the forum but I would really appreciate some help in locating another A2, preferably the 1.6 FSI or TDI 90 as i'd sacrifice some economy for a little extra oomph. My budget is £3000. I would prefer full service history, or if any members here are familiar with a particular motor and can vouch for its roadworthyness. I would also prefer a leather interior (easier to wipe down - young kids). Trouble is, where i'm based (Cumbria) A2's are a little thin on the ground. I've take a quick look on Autotrader, but nothing really catches my eye.

HELP! Please. :D

Sorry to hear your issues with the supplying dealer but I would try if possible to stick with the one you have? My logic is surely if £1400 has been spent at audi there is an element of warranty on any parts and work carried out and it has the potential to come to you in good health. I would suggest an Audi main dealer worth their salt would be embarrassed at billing anyone that some of money only to not fix the faults and bend over backwards to sort in. In the mean time could a courtesy car be offered while works are being completed?

If you feel that this is not an option, keep an eye out on the Spotted for Sale thread and don't be afraid to travel. If you find any potential cars I have no doubt people on here could go and offer a thorough inspection if its near them prior to you travelling? There are a couple of 90's near me (Bristol) which I could go and look at if needs but but work commitments are tight so can only do weekends pending any jobs the better half gives me!

Above all, don't give up hope, they are worth the wait and I hope that Monday offers some better news.

Hi Googlekid,

I've seen this car. Lake District Audi are my local dealer and I popped into their parts department on Thursday evening to collect a few bits and pieces for a fellow club member. As I'm sure you're aware, their service department and the parts department are in the same building, about a mile down the road from the showroom. This car was sat outside. When I mentioned it to the service and parts guys, they couldn't contain their frustration with it and proceeded to have a good rant. Apparently it'd just had a replacement engine ECU, but that it had made no difference (surprise surprise!). When I joked that FSI stood for 'Faulty Since Inception', they replied that their version was somewhat more uncouth: F*cking Sh*t Idea.

The FSI is a great engine when it's running well, but it's by far the most troublesome of all the engines fitted in the A2. The A2 was one of the first cars to be offered with an FSI engine. Whilst VAG have now got the technology to work reliably, the A2's FSI engine still carries the teething problems.

On a more positive note, it's nice that you're set on an A2. You'll be rewarded for your patience as they really are an exceptional car. I'm sorry that you find yourself in the position that you do. I'm just a fraction south of you (in Lancaster) and A2s aren't common 'round here ...and it's practically a metropolis compared to Ulverston.

I'm inclined to echo Paul's comment above. Are you perhaps best sticking with this car? From my brief inspection, it appeared to be in good condition. Lots of work has been done on it and, although none of it has solved the problem, that's still worth something. It is slightly shameful that Audi haven't managed to get to the bottom of the problem, but at the same time I'm not too surprised; Audi dealerships' knowledge of the A2 is often poor. You might consider taking it to Wom Automotive (www.womautomotive.co.uk, www.a2oc.net/forum/member.php?8218-chumsofmanutd). They know the 1.6FSI engine really well and have a great track record of sorting its problems, from misfires to perpetually lit engine management lights.

All the best,

Tom

Good point.

To be honest, I would like to persist with this car as it has all the features I'm looking for in an A2. The cynical part of me thinks perhaps the dealer is wanting to put me off purchasing it so he could relist it at a higher price and possibly recoup some of his outlay on the repairs. I will wait until Monday to hear from him.

Well, I am finally an A2 owner!

I had no luck with the FSI in the end - the dealer was negotiating with Lakeland Audi to sort the misfire without further expense but they refused. I'm arranging a refund from the dealer which I should have by today.

Onwards and upwards though - I managed to find a TDI 75 Sport on a 54 plate with 121,000 on the clock and full Audi service history in fantastic condition. Considering their scarcity in my part of the world I was amazed to find it less than 5 miles away from my house!

First time i've driven the TDI but i'm very pleasantly surprised by the turn of speed.

I'll post some pics soon.

Great news and a great choice of A2 ("The project" is based on a TDI Sport)

As for the performance, it is a very pleasant surprise isn't it?
The 0 to 60 figures indicate a slow car and yet the reality is that they have enough power to make them feel very nippy indeed.

At some stage in the future you might consider a remap?

I think the next surprise you will get is when you see the MPG figures you are getting, even around town!

Then you are in for other little "discoveries"

Have fun and post plenty of pictures of your new acquisition and then lots of posts on here, you will find this forum as pleasant as your A2.
