A2 TDi Air Con Compressor Problems

The air con on my girl friends A2 1.4 TDi has packed up as it wont blow out cold air. I had a air con specialist look at it and said it was the compressor not kicking in and pressurising the system. Has anyone else had any air con problems or compressor failure? I want to get confirmation that it is definitlely the compressor as it is going to cost £750 to get it fixed at Audi and the cheapest I can get the compressor to fit myself is £400 + vat.

One thing that is giving me reason to doubt it is the compressor is that when we were looking at A2's, one we went to see had broken air con and it turned out to be a broken control panel.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I have a spare control panel you are welcome to try if you're ever around the Manchester area!

HI Stephen

You could put a live feed on the compressor and hear it engage then you know weather it is the control panel or compressor.

Or see if you get 12v live feed on the compressor is another way.

Hi Stephen
The A2 aircon compressor is a different design from that found on most other cars. Its a variable displacement unit which runs all the time and responds to input from pressure and temp sensors to work just hard enough to give the required cooling level.
I had a temp sensor fail on my car and the aircon stopped working - so the first thing to do is get a VagCom diagnostic check done. This should eliminate any sensor faults before you start looking at compressors.

Robin, sorry to contradict you but the A2 does not have an electric clutch on the pulley like most other cars.

no problem havent had a good look at the A2 compressor as of yet so just thought it was the same as most other cars.

I agree with Spike, get a VAGCOM check first. I had a temp sensor fault which reduced the compressor efficiency to a fixed level (0.3/0.5 amp from something I read).

Dependent on the age of the car and its Audi service history it has been known for Audi to supply the part free and you pay the labour. Happened with my A4 when it was out of warranty but because I had full service history Audi accepted it should not pack in after only 4 years!

If you seldon use the air con this is when early failure can occur - its best to keep it on all the time and not switch to econ. I notice no difference in fuel consumption - always get 60+

Worth a try

Had same deal after an AVS service.

Turned out to be a loose wire not earthing the air con unit properly! Easy free fix that time.
