Abs light and wheel bearing

Hi guys, my abs light is on and bleeps loudly as soon as I start driving. There is also a wheel gravelly sound coming from front right.
What's my first steps. Are the problems connected at all. Many thanks

wheel bearing has possibly damaged abs sensor or bits of bearing /metal. Now inoperative due to magnetic ring /attached to bearing has failed try not to use car as further damage can be done to the hub/etc repair new bearing as soon as you can

Maybe a VCDS scan would be in order. It might confirm your suspicions order point in the right direction of faultfinding.
If you get the mechanical failure it usually is the sensorring in the wheelbearing itself. Everytime you start the car the abs will perform a selfcheck. Mechanical failure means the selfdiagnose does not receive a signal from the sensor, but the sensor does pass the selftest. So replace the wheelbearing. In most other incidents it will be the abs sensor. Good luck ?

Hi Duncan. Thanks for that.
I did see a wheel bearing kit and it says includes built in abs sensor. Is that the correct one to buy.

But could you perform a VCDS scan? So you do buy the right item solve your problem? Otherwise it could be a waist of money.

How do you do this vcds scan. Is it the same as one of those plug in devices Bluetooth..
I am on a shoestring budget I'm afraid Duncan

The abs ring is a captive part of this style of hub and requires a press tool / collar that imparts force on the outer bearing ring when fitting or premature failure is inevitable
If DIY repair is an option a complete steering knuckle can be swapped over which removes the pressing element from the task
@Howey has a thread running on this topic currently identifying compatible units

Hi Duncan can I ask your advice. The lisr of repairs are getting longer.
With regards to abs light.
Not sure what to do first. Shall i buy and do a vcds scan and see whats up with abs.
Also when turning right I here alot of grumbling from the wheel. Which I think is the bearing. But which one.

Also you have to turn the steering wheel slightly right to go straight. Do you think that could be to do with the bearing affecting it or does it now need tracking too.
Hope you can advise. Thank you

I would perform a VCDS scan first. That will give an accurate diagnose of your abs problem. The solution might be a bit more complicated but not impossible. Turning right or left is of interest when there is a problem with the outer driveshaft joints, less with wheelbearings but I think the scan will confirm and correlate with the affected wheelbearing on that side since you have already replaced that. ?

Hi,mine too has developed this problem, though strangely if I turn off the ignition and then back on the warning lights go off.Any thoughts from anyone? Is it the wheel bearing?

I think there’s a special tool for fitting the wheel bearings and without it, you’re almost guaranteed to damage the new one? My usual garage replaced my front bearing and it failed again within months. And again, a few months later. Then they bought the tool. Never credited me the cost of the bearings they trashed, though…

...and the cost of their labour to ruin it, I bet.

I have a similar problem of the ABS having a problem, the scan showed the ABS sensor was faulty so it has been replaced which made it slightly worse. So now I have a wheel bearing kit (Febi), 36mm socket, and the special tool ready to replace the wheel bearing. Question: In the kit there was the bearing, a new wheel nut and a nylon ring, 72mm OD, 50mm ID about 1.5 mm thick with a series of turned up lugs all the way around the bore, about 4mm high. Does it fit the A2? as I can't see on any instructions a reference to it, does it fit and where?

Surely you had a 12 month parts/labour warranty? I would return with the invoices for a refund or threaten the small claims court!

My take on the plastic ring is that it is to protect the back of the bearing from debris, my skf bearing came with one but oddly the locking ring on the bearing itself is no longer part of the assembly (skf bearing kit). I fitted a second hand hub but plan to fit the new bearing in my original knuckle, let us know how you get on with the tool?

Good Evening Graham,

A post of mine from January that actually references an earlier post of mine.

I would consider sending your bearing back and buying FAG.

Andy

I found a you-tube video of a VW Polo bearing replacement that looks very much like the Audi, I think it is actually the same but don't quote me on that. I think I may have found where the nylon ring might fit. It seems the only logical place to fit it so I will check it out when I fit the new bearing.
