ABS Problems Assistance Please

This is a very interesting, but annoying thread.

I have exactly the same symptoms with my new A2. The problem started on Saturday morning and as yet I’ve not done anything except scanned & cleared the fault codes.

I’m getting 15 to 20 mins driving before 3 beeps and warning symbols re-appear.

Address 03: ABS Brakes Labels: Redir Fail!
Control Module Part Number: 8Z0 907 379 C
Component and/or Version: ESP FRONT MK60 0101
Software Coding: 0019591
Work Shop Code: WSC 00000 785 00200
VCID: 48948EDD42CF
2 Faults Found:

00285 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor; Front Right (G45)
008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent
00285 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor; Front Right (G45)
012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit - Intermittent

Simon,

If you buy the ecu & pump, and they are for MK60, if you don’t use them I’ll buy them off you.

Cheers

Jeff

With those fault codes Jeff, they relate to the sensor on the hub of the front right wheel. Either damaged cable or damaged sensor.

Thanks John,

I thought as much but ran through the VCDS ABS tests during the night.

I thought I might have resolved the issue as I drove 40 miles home this morning without the warning lights, but as I drove over a speed hump at 15mph the dash lit up like a Christmas tree.

Fault code this morning before clearing:

00285 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor; Front Right (G45)
008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent

I'll pull the wheel off tonight and check the cabling back to the connector behind the A-pillar trim, if it's fine then hopefully it's just a new wheel speed sensor.

Cheers

Jeff

Remove the sensor from the hub and clean it.

Then using a thinish flat head screw driver, poke that through the hole with a cloth wrapped over it, doused in WD40 and hold it on the ring then turn the driveshaft so it cleans the signal ring.

Hi there change the full hub.It was surprisingly inexpensive.I am sure it came in at £146 fitted.I tried all of the above to no avail. The implausible signal code is the pick up ring breaking up, mine failed completely and fell out when the bearing failed.I knew the bearing was on its way out but didnt have the cash to fix it and having had the ABS prob for a while I didnt need any more expense.Having the hub changed cured the problem as I like yourself was convinced the problem was else where. The bearing was not knacked at this point and no where near the rumbly stage either as this problem showed long before the ring collapsed.

Davemac(and others)

Thanks for the replies

I cant afford to change the hub now until January

Just to confirm i dont have the implausable signal code its the mechanical intermitent code front right abs sensor that i keep getting.

It now chatters on the front right abs only when braking when i move off and abs fault lights and beeps kick in over 20kmh until i restart the engine and it does it again.

If you look back in the post i changed the sensor when it initialy started playing up and it got slightly better

after fitting the new sensor but before i cleaned the sensor hole/ changed cabling to sensor and got rid of rust and sprayed wd 40 it was only setting off on cold mornings about 1 mile from home and at speeds of over 50mph

so if it is the sensor ring it has got worse as a result of spraying wd40 in the sensor hole and cleaning the rust from the sensor hole ??

The bearing sounds fine at the moment and as prev it was a new one (non audi) back in march this year but i dont have too much faith in the garage that fitted it so it is a possibility they damaged the sensor ring or did not press the bearing in correctly back in march and it has gradualy worn over the summer.

Should i bother doing anything else now (like trying to clean sensor ring with wd40 sprayed onto a rag and poked through the hole as suggested above??) or just change the bearing when i can afford it in january (mot is up then also and i dont think it will pass with abs lights on?)

Simon

Go to the mot place or phone round about an ask their advice. Some garages will pass with an ABS light on some wont.As the ABS is an enhancement and doesnt affect the braking effort of the car, ,mine passed two mots with the light on constantly , as for WD 40 cant see it making much difference I like yourself could annoy the fault but not eliminate it and change the full hub not just the bearing.Hope this helps

i have not done anything new since last week however i cleaned the car fully today and well cleaned the arches area

when i started the car and drove off the spedo only recorded about half the speed i was traveling at

the abs light remained lit and the car did not beep 3 times as usual, on restarting the car it went back to normal
ie all abs lights and 3 beeps on moving off

any ideas may the above sound familiar to anyone

my next step is going to be changing the bearing again in January unless anyone thinks the above circumstances point to something else like a loose earth or something

Hi Simon
There is a speedo sender unit on the gearbox and the signal will provide the reference point for ABS operation. If the individual wheel sensor output does not correlate with the speedo signal while braking, the ABS will operate. Signals from the yaw sensor, steering position sensor etc are used to trigger individual wheel braking while the traction control or ESP is working.
Not heard of the speedo problem before but I can see why the ABS light came on. All I can suggest is to check the gearbox sensor and wiring connector are not loose.

Abs

I had that problem with my 03 TDI. After replacing the sensor the lights and beeps would still appear! Turned out to be the lead from the sensor. I disconnected the plug from the sensor and connected a volt meter. THe reading was at 12V but when I moved the lead the voltage would drop. The lead was faulty! I cut the lead and replaced the part that was damaged by using a 2 core, some soldering, a couple of heat shrinks and self amalgamating tape...........Cheap fix!:)

THERE ARE SO MANY VARIABLES FOR JUST ONE FAULT CODE!!!

Today on leaving for work the speedo did not register correctly until the 3 beeps and lights lit and then it jumped back to the correct speed and was right all the way to work (20 miles) however the abs lights remained.

All i did different yesterday was presure spray the wheel arches and clean it.

I am going to try the cheapest fix first by completly replacing the lead to the sensor, checking the gearbox sensor lead before replacing the hub bearing/abs ring as a last resort.

in the garage

Well i have given up on it and sent it to my local vw/audi specialists hopefully it will be the hub faulty and not the ecu!! Fingers crossed.

abs sorted

Well the abs is up and running again, my local audi specialist found it wad the hub had not been pressed in far enough and was about 4mm out.
Pheww!!! Glad it was not the ecu!! And on a lighter note my a2 passed its mot !! At least the garage didnt rip me off as they could quite easily have charged me for a new hub, in the end it cost me £140 which was for two hours labour and the mot

I would recomend them
