Advice Please About Buying an A2

It seems a good price for the car? Best Insurance from a quick check is £400 with a provisional licence, £1000 fully comp with a full licence

Paul is a member on here and has a good reputation for sourcing nice A2 and turning them over at reasonable prices. This is an import. Or at least I'm fairly sure it is on account of the black door handles and mirror casings. That was early euro spec. Bit of paint been done at the front too as the vents were never colour coded but I think this is a nice car. The A3 SE alloys look good too.

I think i'd sooner have the one from Paul. It looks to be a much straighter/honest car. Also by the looks of it he has a lot of experience buying A2's so will know what to look for when buying from the trade.

Thanks, would the fact it's an import.be a problem in any way do you think?

It may affect the premium slightly with some insurance companies but this normally the case if its a grey import from Japan. It highly likely that it was imported (if indeed it actually is an import) very early on in its life. It may not even be showing as an import on the logbook. I had a golf that was an import a few years ago and it made absolutely no difference to the insurance etc etc

As to the import or not import status of the car, I'd say that it was not an import. A2s have never been a big sales success and apart from the UK, I'm not sure that there's another market where they're right hand drive.

I'd say it was a better bet, taking the colour co-ordination of the front grille and fog covers into consideration, that the black mirror casings and door handles were just replacements for parts that were either modified and didn't work out, or that it was a half-hearted attempt at a colour storm modification. If you buy new casings and handles from Audi, they come in this matte black finish as standard.

If you do go for it, unless it specifically says on the paperwork that it is an import, then don't even mention it to an insurer, because I don't think it is one.

Cheers,

Michael

The other halfs first Beetle was an import as we found some paperwork in German with the reg number and German dealer plate holders. It did not say on the V5 it was though.

Nothing wrong with imported cars, people were put off buying them used back in the late 90's early 00's for some reason?

In about 2002 I pursued a Golf GT TDI with lovely spec and didn't buy it as it was a personal import. I had nothing against it being imported let's face it they all are! My issue was that it would have been bought at a discounted rate and was being sold at full UK retail price at 2 years old. Just a principle.

Personal import right hand drive A2 do exist. I looked at a red TDI in Glasgow some years ago. It was imported by the first keeper and had the black detail hence my speculation. Best bet is to ask Paul if anyone is interested. He's a straight up kind.

I agree with that Murdo, it was probably more that people knew the seller paid less, so would not buy unless it was a lot cheaper than a uk spec one.

Our very first A2 in 2001 was an import, we bought it brand new in the UK from a general car dealer (i.e. not eBay) and it just had 20 miles on it and a huge cost saving. It had been pre-registered as a "Y" reg and it looked the same as every other A2 with no cosmetic differences, but it was definitely an import!!!

This car has been for sale for a very very long time. I dont know if there is anything wrong with it but i would ask you to draw your own conclusions.

thanks; to the untrained eye it looks a nice example - anyone near Bradford been to see it?

..... the seller appears to give the impression of being an Audi dealership - odd. The address on the ad is in fact a private address in Bradford.
