Hi All,
I have just returned home after having my air-conditioning compressor (Denso) replaced and the system re-gassed by some really nice guys in North Kent. Air-Con Direct http://www.ac4cars.co.uk/

They were truly fantastic in every way. I even got free cups of tea throughout the 2 hour 20 minute wait while the work was being done.
No more hot air is blown from the vents when on LO. Excellent job all round. I'm very satisfied. Rare to find such companies that you can trust nowadays.

So I thought I would share the details of the company and sing their praises and of course, also to help any of you fellow owners who may need their air-con repaired, serviced, or replaced ready for the boiling hot British summer to come.

All the best to you all,
Drew.

Good to know and even better that they are in my home town.

How much did they charge for the new compressor?

I recently bought a brand new denso compressor from Europarts for a 1.4tdi. They retail at £270 but they must have had a glut of stock and offered me a small amount of discount - in total it came to £208 + VAT. A specialist air con garage fitted it but their quote for a new compressor was around £330+ so in effect i saved myself £100 at Europarts.

As an alternative to the above i was talking to a local Audi mechanic today. He had an air conditioning compressor out and "on the bench". He said 99.9% of compressor failures relate to the clutch mechanism. He showed me one of these clutches, which had just arrived from Poland for the princely sum of £37. By effecting this repair you would then have a kind of reconditioned compressor and it may be a cheaper option.

Historically air con compressors used a magnetic on-off clutch for the compressor drive with a tell-tale power lead used to energise the clutch. I suspect the Audi mechanic was referring to this type of system
A2s don't have this type of clutch but use a variable displacement compressor which runs continuously but only pumps enough refrigerant to cool the cabin to the set temperature. The drive pulley does not incorporate a clutch but has a built in cush drive which slips if the compressor is overloaded or seizes. If the drive fails there is likely to be something seriously wrong with the compressor which would need rectifying before a replacement pulley is considered.

Not sure if I've got the wrong end of the stick here but I just wanted to ensure members don't think a replacement pulley is a simple fix.

Cheers Spike

I'm looking to replace the clutch for the compressor drive on my 2004 tdi90. Does anyone know the part number or a supplier please? Any accounts of swapping out a failed clutch gratefully received. Thanks. David
