Aluminium Fatigue

Real contradiction in terms here guys , I also had a call today , my A2 is going in Tuesday. They estimate job will only one day !

Lets keep talking and feeding back info , It sounds as if the dealers are unsure of scope of work.

I just went into My Local Audi Today to see if I could get it booked in for the repairs as I have cracks showing on both front doors.
The chap who looked at the car agreed I had them and said they will phone when they have checked with Audi to make sure it is covered by goodwill.
Just got a phone call from them and they said that it will not be covered under goodwill.

I don't know the extent of your craxks, but if you want to send me a photo, I'll be glad to advise and then get in touch with Audi UK, should it be necessary.

Cheers,

Mike

Only for your information:
In Germany it is only done by goodwill and most cars will be repaired but not all. Not my car! It is a june/2000 model and has 94000km.

If I understand it right, in the UK is every car covered by the goodwill but not in Germany.

Blow by blow here guys. Mines in Blackburn, taken more than a day to do. Should be ready tomorrow. Dealership admitted its the first they have done. Still being really pleasant about it.
Id agree with Mike its not goodwill its hard work by a no of people that have made this repair / mod possible.

Pics and report to follow

Final installment. Job takes two full days. First day hinges replaced? and resprayed , second day "bonding agent used had to cure". Car returned with what looks like slightly smaller hinges and a small boot / rubber gaiter on the door around the hinge.

It looks like this

That's what it it looks like with the repair-kit. Under the black rubber part there is an additional new sheet metal.

erstens,

so whats the quality of the repair like under that nice new rubber part?????????????????????????????????????

It is not my car and I don't get any good will for my June 2000 car. So I only can guess. But now I know, how they do it. They use Epoxy to bond the inner and outer sheet metal and there is an additional sheet metal unter the rubber. And the owner of the shown car thinks that the door does not open so widely anymore.

Recently had mine 'repaired' the rubber has been glued to the outside of the door but it does not look like any plate has been fitted altough I know the body shop had the door cards off so perhaps its on the inside??

Hi Cant get my drivers side boot off but the passenger side comes off and there is NO PLATE underneath. Drivers side is stuck with better glue but my my guess is no plate.

If I had to estimate what they have done it is .
Remove door
Remove hinges
Reinforce inner door (anyone prepared to take off all the decor)
Glue reinforcing plate
Replace main hinge
Respray new hinge
Fit boot
Allow adhesive (inner door ) to set

Release to customer.

For the technical , list of parts used
see attached

ps They might have done some work on the door catch see lots of earlier forums

Hi Steve

Are you pleased with the job? I note in your list that they "Respray new hinge". So is that the only spraying done and is it all out of sight when the doors is closed? And given that they took the door off, cards off, and worked on the hinge etc. have they avoided any damage to the door paint?

Steve,
so has the audi fix cut away the alimunium were the crack formed or is that still as was, and do you feel this is a quality repair??????

Regards

Colin

The cracks are still there. No metal will be cut away. The rubber part just makes the cracks invisible.

The attachment is to small.

Hi Guys hard to give a categoric answer . Re passenger side no cracks evident.

Following the door repair main thing you notice is door doesnt close as well as B4. Have to say though door movement eg arc is similar. Overall is it quality repair ? well it certainly is an invisible repair eg its hard to work out whats been done !

So I guess we are back to the fundemental questions is this a cosmetic issue as stated by Audi or more of a structural issue which is just covered over by using an internal plate bonded to the original internal door structure and a rubber cover glued into postion. So if its only a cosmetic issue why bother to go to this length why not just use the outer rubber boot and cover up the problem - solved.
For me this level of fix is very dissapointing especially after having to wait this length of time and would Audi have used the same low cost solution for the A8, I doubt it as the retribution from the customer base would have been swift and bloody.

See all my pics posted earlier. There already is a thicker sheet metal inside the dorr, there can not be addit a second one on th einside!
But just think. Could there only be a rubber part, thicker than 3 mm ? No! There can not because the door would not be mounted tight! It would fall down 1-2 mm.
So there must be a sheet metal at the outside under the rubber and with that it must be an new hingue with a thinner main metal mounting- plate.

And it is more cosmetic because the thicker sheet metal at the inside is for taking the doors weight and give it by the rivets from the outer door sheet metal to the inner sheet metal and so to the hingue.
