Aluminium Trim for interior - Matt or Shiny?

I'm trying to see if I can get an "aluminium pack" for the interior of my A2 and the parts come in two codes; 3Q7 (Aluminium) and 1K5 (Alu matt). Which looks best?

The matt code stops in 2002, the shiny is more recent.

Hi tigas
I have a 2001 car with the alu. pack and have never noticed any difference in the finish when compared to later models so it must be very subtle.
I'd check if the individual trim pieces are still stocked in both codes as availability of a full set may be the deciding factor.

Cheers Spike

Hi Tigas,
can you describe what's in that pack and whats its price ?
My A2 has no aluminium interior trim, and I'd like to have those bits, especially the rings around the dials... (but I thought they weren't available alone and that you have to buy a whole dials unit ?)
Cheers,

Well, join the club then - I have NO IDEA. I call it "aluminium pack" because that once was the name the dealers gave it. I think it then became Sport and S-Line, depending on year.

I was able to find some part numbers for it, though. Remember that these parts need the colour codes 1K5 for matt alu 2000-2002 and 3Q7 for alu 05/2002-2005.

Ring for brake lever: 8Z0 711 330 A
Button for brake lever: 8Z0 711 333 A
Ring for passenger handle on dashboard: 8Z0 857 326 1K5 or 8Z0 857 326 A 3Q7
Glovebox latch: 8Z1 857 149 A 1K5 or 8Z1 857 149 B 3Q7 (LHD, as in Belgium and Portugal)
Ring for gearbox (manual): 8Z0 863 279 F 3Q7 or 8Z0 863 279 D 1K5

Still missing:
Instrument cluster front cover with alu rings (you're right, I can only find the part for the whole cluster, not the cover alone) - heck, then might as well get one with full DIS!

8Z0 920 930 NX - "aludesign with FIS diesel engine"
8Z0 920 930 PX - "aludesign with FIS otto engine"
8Z0 920 930 QX - "aludesign with FIS 1.2TDI"
8Z0 920 980 JX - "aludesign with FIS diesel engine MPH"
8Z0 920 980 KX - "aludesign with FIS otto engine MPH"

These clusters need someone to code them - don't know if, since it seems to involve the imobilizer, it really needs to be done by a dealer. A lot easier would be to go around the salvage yards and try to scrounge a good one, and remove the plastic cover into your current cluster - this cover just seems to not be available from Audi.

And the A3/A4/A5/A6 only have to pay 5 pounds to get alu rings from eBay. AFAIK, there's no such option for the A2.

Inserts on door handles (front and back, left and right) - The whole door panel needs to be replaced to get it. So it's 4 door panels + fitting which could become a bit expensive...

ooooookay, let's start from the beginning.

Early models had shiny door levers. Later ones have matt. That change was made in 2002 - I have matt ones.

The finish is brushed anodized aluminium.

There is no such thing as aluminium rings for the speedo.
This has been gone through a thousand times on different fora: IT IS PAINT!

Get the cluster cover if you can, it's then a 10 min job to replace.

The door cards will need to be replaced to get the alu trim on the armrests, and that will not be cheap.

Is it possible to remove the inserts from the door cards to paint them ?
I have bought a paint kit called "chrome silver" that is said to give a result similar to S-style mirrors ; I'll try it on the mirror casings sooner or later, and I intend to use it aswell on the glovebox lever, the ring at the base of the gear lever, and possibly those doorcards inserts.
Bu my door levers are shiny (chrome), so maybe it's better to avoid another type of silver finish just next to them, and leave those inserts as they are...

For the rings of the speedo cluster, I think it would be very tricky to paint them, as I understood the glass does not come off the cover, so I would have to blank everything that should not be painted...
Better buy a whole cluster with full DIS, I guess.

which inserts?

Taking the armrests off the card is a one-way job, they are connected using plastic welds.

sounds to me as though this is not a job for the faint hearted..... is it really worth all the hassle, risk etc? Would be easier to change the car..... Or buy an aftermarket dashtrim kit which will brighten up the interior even if it does not include the items you want.

this is one of the oldest quest since the begining days of A2OC when it was with the previous owner. Back then, the nice guys at VAGPART help me to track down all the parts, basically it is simply not worth it and there is no such thing as alu. pack retro fit. Are you willing to pay ~£30 for a alu. glove box handle, let alone replacing all the door cards?

Whoohoo... I knew I wouldn't have been the only one, but I didn't know of big of an history this issue had.

Like I said, I have basically let go of the speedo and the door cards - way too expensive.

But the other parts, if offered for a reasonable price (and the Euro is strong to the pound nowadays), would liven the interior up a bit - it's too dark inside.

I'll wait until Stoke Audio comes back from vacations.

And re: getting a new car. Well, who doesn't dream of a TDI90 with cream leather interior, Opensky, RNS-D and parking assistance? How many of those were made? How ruined would I be with the part-exchange for my 1.4 petrol basic? Not an option.

For the doorcards you could always go for what I did:

You can buy stick-on 'chrome' strip in a 3.5mm width I think it is.Fits perfect on the door cards, passenger 'dash bar' and by the back seats there is another grey channel you can fit it in. Very effective I think as long as you don't go over the top.

wait, the holes are there? I thought it was blank? Then it's easy. I have one in pieces downstairs, maybe I can do some photos tomorrow evening.

Bret

What do you mean 'holes' Bret? The space where aluminum strip would be is simply a ridge and blank with plastic. TBH, I think if you're handy with arts and crafts, then you can cut a piece of kitchen foil :))), spray adhesive or use double sided tape on one side and stick it on the interior parts! And you can even take your pick for shiny or matte-finish with the either side of the kitchen foil!
