Any ideas and where to go?

Hi,

Just a couple of quick questions.

Whilst driving to work yesterday (after about 20 mins) the car stalled (instant switch of just like someone had removed the keys). Tried to restart it and the starter motor fired but the engine wouldn't catch. Left the car for 2 minutes or so and it started fine. The wife drove it straight home with no problems, she then drove back to pick me up and home with no issues although we are now getting a flashing glow-plug light and engine management light. I then drove in again this morning and the same thing happened. Just wondering if anyone has experienced the same and if they have what was the cause.

The next issue is that my local dealer - Newcastle Audi - charges (now we are out of warranty) £110 for diagnostics  (a little steep for plugging in a cable I think!!). There is a good local Audi/VW specialist - Volksentre in Blyth if anyone is wondering - but they cant look at the car until 28th Jan... a little too long if this happens every day. So does anyone know a good cheaper alternative to the local dealer around Newcastle Upon Tyne?

Cheers,
RDufton

Hi
If you can travel the 50 miles or so down to Richmond I can do a VagCom scan for you.

Cheers Spike

Sorry its taken a while to reply... busy life and changing ISPs....

Thanks for your offer Spike but I have managed to get the VAG COM check done by the local place and I wouldn't have liked to chance the long drive as the problem with cutting out has been getting worse (wouldn't start at all over the weekend!!) It is now running again with no changes so fingers crossed it will make it back to the garage when it is booked in!!

The diagnostic check has come back with the "RPM Sensor" which the guy at the garage has reliably informed me would cause the problems I have had. Has anyone else had a faulty one of these and was it sorted easily?

Hi
A faulty RPM (or engine speed) sensor would cause the engine to cut out. The engine won't start once it fails completely. I'm surprised the fault has been intermittent for some time - which may indicate loose / damaged wiring. Normally this type of sensors either works or it doesn't.
Let us know how you get on

Cheers Spike

Thanks again Spike!

I don't suppose you know where the sensor sits - at least that way I can look to see if I can see any visible signs of damage - and maybe see the cause!!

Hi
The sensor is on the side of the cyl block, facing the radiator. I have not checked this myself but it should be a couple of inches up from the sump flange and the same amount back from the gearbox mounting face

Cheers Spike
