Any road cyclists or triathletes out there?

Dan, wishing you well - breaking the big bone in your arm in 5 places sounds like it was the result of a big crash? Or was it just a very awkward landing?
Russ

It was low speed hence the bike survival! Crashed into a metal crash barrier - those ones surrounding pedestrian crossings at traffic lights. My arm took the full force of impact.

So, plucked up the courage to get out on my bike for the first time since breaking my arm back in August, and after a few minutes of initial nerves, I soon got back into the flow and enjoyment of it.

As a serial modder, the time with the bike off the road wasn't wasted either. A few judicious part replacements to lose weight/ improve performance/ pure bling have started to find their way onto the bike, most notably a set of full carbon 50mm tubular wheels which weigh just 1kg for the pair and make a whooshing noise a bit like a Tie fighter when moving at speed, plus Dura-Ace titanium cassette, Dura-Ace front and rear mechs, and this weekend, I shall be installing a Dura-Ace crankset. Aiming to get the bike down to the 6.8Kg lower limit for racing :)

Sorry to hear of your crash Dan.

Glad you've not been put off.
Where were the wheels from? What hubs are fitted? Have you actually weighed them, as 1kg seems very dubious, especially for 50mm....

Shiny things definitely help with motivation, that's my excuse anyway, and I'm sticking to it!!
Dura-Ace is a huge jump though from Tiagra!! You'll find the shifters will make the biggest difference, soooo buttery.

Not sure I would have worried about the groupset though to be honest. A higher end frame with a more/less aggressive geometry to suit would have given better results.

Keep pedalling everyone!

Hope your arms better matey....i build retro MTB as a hobby i have rebuilt, cannondales, pace and orange i have owned most over the years from the retro m1000 and m2000...super v and clockwork orange bikes great fun but with the retro/kult thing going on people have jumped on the band wagon, shops included and parts are now becoming hard to source, prices are steep,i currently have a cannondale genuine M series the frame i bought some years ago, pace equipped with xtr and xt everything else,im currently converting to disc.

Im after some carbon rigid forks if anybody out there has any in there garage.....1 1/8 steerer at least 200mm long,or possibly rigid alum forks?

Yep arm is making slow but steady progress, along with my fitness.
The bike now weighs just 7kg with the new "Farsports" carbon wheelset (including Tufo tubular tyres) and DuraAce groupset (which I got ridiculously cheap - got the 7900 mechanical series as now there is the 9000 DA series, not to mention 3 versions of electronic shifting, so there are plenty of parts going round from people upgrading!) The DA crank and shifters are now on too and it's all really good, I've never known such smooth gearchanges, front and back. I remembered how much I hate fixing bar tape though!
What has come off though are the clipless pedals - I have a bit of a mental block about using those after the crash, so I've got some pretty lightweight integrated pedals with good old fashioned toe clips.

I'm doing the Blenheim Palace Tri in June, so lots to work towards.

Hang in there with the pedals......took me a year or so after my clip related accident to fully trust them again. I started with them looser and gradually tightened them up. I also upgraded to a better pedal and new shoe fastenings which made it much easier.

I surprised myself how positive I felt after going out with some mates the first few times . So much so, I've just invested in a new carbon ride and have three sportives in the diary already for this year. :D

I don't think I'll go back to clipless pedals for a while yet - my arm is still in recovery phase and I dread to think what would happen if I fell on it again just yet! What new bike have you bought?

Boardman Team Carbon . First road bike for 20+ years. Even though this is the entry level for carbon bikes the difference so far between this and my alu hybrid is immense. Can't wait for the weather to improve!

Wow I bet seeing me reply to such a "fitness" topic is a shock- but here we go. Nee777.a2 saying about retro mtb's I owned a few mountain bikes but my favourite was my canondale m600 the one with the smaller back wheel. The second reason I posting is sympathy for dan b as I had a simular cycling accident on my way home from work. I mounted the kerb at a busy roundabout (2 inches at tbe most) the back wheel slid along the curb spitting me off into unkept grass. It resulted in a broken leg in 3 places. The police were adamant I was covering up an impact from a car due to the severity of the breaks. I had unfortunatly landed onto a raised drain cover and being unable to get my foot out of the toe clips my leg took the weight of the crash. 11months off work and nearly loosing the lower half of my left leg later I was back able to ride. But complications with the bone meant I would be in trouble if I ever broke it again.
Oh to be that fit again....

Ouch......11 months.

And if you saw my frame and weight on a bike with 23mm wide tyres you'd not worry too much I suspect.....

So having finally got my arm signed off from the fracture clinic in March, almost 8 months after the accident, I'm back into the swing of full training for my first triathlon - Blenheim Palace, in early June. Yikes!

Here's my carbon bike with my new carbon wheels attached to my aluminium car. Lightweight materials ahoy!
I hit 43mph on this the other day - downhill of course - but boy does that feel fast!

Bike looks fab. Fastest I have done is 51mph going down Harewood bank behind a lorry on my Planet X Ti road bike....was hovering over those brakes all the way down!

51mph?! Blimey, that's seriously going some!
Surprised no one has commented on my non-regulation roof bars with OpenSky :)

Well, my first triathlon fast approacheth - Saturday 7th June in fact. Nervous, but looking forward to it :)

Wow! Tell us more. What are the distances involved?

Always such an amazing event

Very best of luck and hope you enjoy it!

Hilary

I'm competing at Blenheim Palace Triathlon this Saturday.
750m swim, 20km bike, 6km run.
Yikes!
